[SOLVED] Is it possible?

Hi folks; it's me with another situation..
I have 2 desktop pc's and 1 laptop. 1 desktop is connected to LAN using modem (Comcast), 1 is not connected to any net, and the laptop has internal mini wifi wireless...
I would like to set up a home net where one desktop and the laptop are wireless and the other desktop remain connected as LAN-----but all 3 connected together somehow.. Is this possible and if so what do i need besides a router?

Thanks

Re: Is it possible?

Hi 2X..........Just to let you know that all went well on setting up the wireless; i had problems with putting security on it but a call to Netgear got me going on that.. THANKS for guiding me to the microsoft site, helped a lot.
I am now trying to figure out how to make all pc's print to the printer that is connected to the primary desktop via usb.. I have surfed the internet and it seems there are a lot of solutions but none have worked for me so far.. I have an HP OFFICEJET 7210 ALL IN ONE... If you have any ideas on this I would appreciate some advice... Thanks again!

Re: Is it possible?

Hello Sarge....you did well setting up your wireless network.

To connect to the shared printer, pls. follow this procedure:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...utt_july2.mspx

Note: Verify that all your computer name in all computers in the network has the same name, for ex. MSHOME, Enable File and Printer Sharing in LAN Properties.

Re: Is it possible?

I haven't shared a network printer in a long time, but if I remember right you just right click on the printer (in the printers and faxes list) select sharing and security and turn on network sharing. Then on the other computers, do add printer and select network printer, then find a printer in the directory.

Sorry if this sounds vague, I'm at work and can't give a detailed walk through.

Re: Is it possible?

Hi 2x............. Well, i had already tried the one you referenced and have tried about 5 more since then; nothing is working.. I have a feeling i may have made so many diff changes i may have to do a Restore and start over.. The laptop is running Vista and the desktops have xp home and there are different things you have to change for each.
So right now I am confused as he--!! I will keep plugging away though and please keep me informed of any ideas you may have..........THANKS

Re: Is it possible?

Printer sharing is not too complicated to setup, not unless there are some misconfiguration in your network, pls. double check.

Would you mind telling me what have you done so far? This will give some ideas for troubleshooting purpose. I really would like to help you out Sarge.

Re: Is it possible?

Sorry for slow response 2x; got wrapped up in another project so I could get my mind off this print/file sharing for a while...
I am ready now, with a clear mind anyway, to start over again.. I can not tell you what all I have tried; really, everything I find that recommends a way to set it up---i tried it!!
But like a dummy, when it didnt work i didnt go back and undo it, i just went on to the next suggestion and tried that..
I still have one desktop that I havent tried anything on so mabbe if we start from scratch on that one and get it going right, i can go back to the laptop and make corrections.. The desktop that has not been changed has a large hd that has been split and has Vista and XP on it..
I really appreciate your desire to help so if you can tell me step by step what to do on the other desktop and which OS you want to start with we can go from there...
THANKS

Re: Is it possible?

Hello Sarge....do this for rt now, make sure that your All in One Printer is plugged in to the wired computer. This is where you are going to share the printer from (follow the link the I gave you on how to share the printer). It is also important that all computers in your home network has the same name in the Workgroup and Files and Printers sharing are all enabled. I have to go again, we'll continue this later on.

Re: Is it possible?

Hi 2x.. Just replied to your pm.......
If you are talking about connecting the printer to the desktop that I havent made any changes to. that is gonna take some shuffling of furniture/pc's.... I havent even installed the printer, wireless connections, etc., to it and I will need to move it closer to the printer to connect it. Not a big deal, just wanted to let you know it will be tomorrow sometime before I can be ready for that.. Let me know and i will get it done tomorrow and be ready for you tomorrow night (remember i am 3 hours later than you).
THANKS FRIEND!

Re: Is it possible?

Yes Sir...this is what you will need to do first in order for you to share the printer. It can be a lot of hassle, but once it's done properly, things will be way better. tomorrow will a better day for me, I have to go again. daughter and I went shopping to the LAAFB commissary/bx today, tax free.

edit: Before you move stuff around, is this a wireless network printer? If it is you don't need to.

Re: Is it possible?

Sarge... i will need some info and answers from you. This will help me a lot to walk you through on sharing your network printer. I won't be available again maybe for the next 3 to 4 hrs. But for now, these info is very impt:
1.) Workgroup Name of your 3 computers
2.) Computer Name of your 3 computer (Rt click My Computer and it shd give you that info)
3.) ipconfig /all info of all computers (Click on Start, type cmd on start field, from the command prompt screen, pls type this on each computer....ipconfig /all)
NOTE: The ipconfig/all info will give me all the details of each computer, incl No. 1 and 2 request).
I will check back on this thread in a little while.

Re: Is it possible?

oh boy....i kinda have a hint, Let us give your computer nice Comp Names and workgorup...shall we.... Pls. try this....Let us change the Workgroup Name first. To do this...right click on My Computer =>Properties => in Computer Name tab => click on change, think of a Computer Name for Ex: Sarge, next computer, you may put Jerry, 3rd one think of another name, pls. remove all those AlphaNumeric. How about Workgroup? do you want to put your family name? for ex. FAMILYSMITH. Do not put any space in your Computer Name and Workgrp Name. After all these changes you will have to restart your computer. Just take it easy, it's not that hard.
