I'm running Vista and my router is a Linksys WRT54G2 V1.
I'm trying to setup my router in my new apartment and I can connect my computer to the wall and get internet. When I plugin the ethernet cable from the wall to my router, I cannot access the internet even though I can ping my router fine and mess around with it's settings in my browser. I've factory reseted the router, upgraded to the most recent firmware nothing seems to work as of now. I have also tried connecting my iPod touch to my network (and also connect to my router settings through the safari browser) but I cannot access the internet. <---- *DNS Problem? Here's window's analysis of why my connection doesn't work (see image attached) I'm going to run some tests and pop some more info in this post in a few minutes. Here's some commands I ran while connected to my router (wired). One thing I noticed is that it's taking... not the usual 1-2ms to ping my router. It's taking 8-10 which is very strange. Quote:

Re: Cannot access internet through router
So your apartment has the Internet access for you, correct. So when you direct connect your pc to the jack in the wall, you are using the Internet connection supplied by your apartment building, correct? If so, you may be connectiong to the apartment buildings router/switch, and depending on the apartments hardware, they may not allow a router to connect to it. Check with the apartments management to see.

Re: Cannot access internet through router
That is correct, they provide internet access. Mmm, I'll check. However I would bet money that that isn't the case (not sure how connecting to a router of theirs technically works), because I'm receiving other wireless networks around me that are from other students.
And yes, they do allow students to setup routers. Last edited by FLashFIr; 09-15-2009 at 12:14 PM. |

Re: Cannot access internet through router
I've found it's not DNS that's the issue. I can ping my ISP's DNS servers when I'm connected computer to wall but when I'm connected to the wall through my router, I cannot ping ANYTHING outside my own network.
It appears that my router is working fine also. Should I try MAC Address Cloning? |
