[SOLVED] Strange Problem -- Dropped HTTP
This is an odd problem that we've been living with for a while. Periodically our home network will lose all HTTP and FTP access, often while downloading large files or pages with lots of images, though it can happen any time. All HTTP connections time out, no matter what OS or browser is used. However, online games, IRC, MSN, AIM, and connections through Privoxy+TOR still work. The Windows connection icon still says we're connected to the internet, and if you click "diagnose and repair" button in the network and sharing center it simply shows the standard waiting screen and doesn't do anything for half an hour. The only way to fix the problem is to unplug power to both the modem and router, then plug in the modem, allow it to start up, then plug in the router and allow it to start up. Otherwise we have no HTTP or FTP access at all, until the modem+router are reset.
I'm fairly certain the problem has something to do with our router, a "Belkin Wireless G" (only model identification I can find). We originally encountered this problem while living in Midland, Texas, with Suddenlink as our ISP. We later moved to New Orleans, where our ISP is Cox. We changed modems during the move but kept the same router. Living in New Orleans the problem persisted for about two months, then went away entirely for three months. It has just recently come back, and after not having to reset the modem six times a week for so long it's maddening to have to do it again. I'm not very good with networks, but if you need any more information I'll do my best to find it, if you can tell me how.

Re: Strange Problem -- Dropped HTTP
Hello Phædrus2401....I assume that you have all the ports open for FTP (20 and 21).
Have you tested your bandwidth speed? http://www.speedtest.net. I would start here. Pls. let me know the results.

Re: Strange Problem -- Dropped HTTP
Ack, didn't see your response here. Well, we assumed it was something wrong with the router, since by all accounts Belkin products are fairly shoddy, so we got this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833704002 Second-highest rated wireless router on newegg.com and inexpensive. We're hooking it up tonight and we'll see if the problem goes away. If it does, case closed... If we start seeing problems crop up in the next week, expect to see a lot more of me. :P EDIT: Speed test shows (for our connection to the ISP), ping: 16ms, download: 14.66Mbps, upload: 3.7Mbps.

Re: Strange Problem -- Dropped HTTP
Problem seems to have gone away! I guess it was just something screwy with that Belkin router.
![]() EDIT: Also appears to be much faster, with a speedtest.net download speed of 24Mbps and a ping of 13ms, though upload is slightly slower for some reason.
