Networking and update problems for windows XP[MOVED]
We have a wireless network in my house, the router is a Dlink DGL-4500, hooked up to a cable modem using charter communications. And my wireless adapter is an Intel R Wifi link 5100 AGN.
Under network connections under LAN or high speed internet I have three icons. 1. Local area connection-disabled Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet (If I were to directly connect using an Ethernet cable) 2. 1394 Connection-disabled (This adapter may not actually exist on my computer. I migrated everything from the old to the new) 3. And of course, the one I know I have which says: Wireless network Connection Validating Identity. The icon has two computer monitors, connected by two lines to an antenna, beside one of the lines is a question mark. In my sys tray I have an icon which says validating identity. Which would seem to mean it is trying to connect to the network. However, everything seems to be fine. I can pull up web pages and get my email and use any internet based program. However, sometimes the icon will have an X through it if I leave my computer idle (the screen will go black and I'll need to hit my power button to "wake it up") then it will go back to the same validating identity situation. I read that this problem can be caused by different encryption being used than what it is set to. So, I went into the router settings and changed it from WAP to WEP, which caused me and the rest of the people in my household not to be able to get on the network at all. I had to get an ethernet cable and directly connect to the router to change it back. Still I want it to finish and solve this problem. Second thing. It never installs my updates to windows. When I shut down my computer it has the option to shut down and install the updates, or shut down without installing them. I choose not to install them because installing them seems not to work. It will say it's installing them. Then the next time I use my computer and shut it down it will say the same thing (without me downloading any more updates) |

Re: Networking and update problems for windows XP
As for Windows Update, find out which updates aren't installing by going to Windows Update History and try downloading a stand alone version. As for the wireless, you might try resetting the PW on the Encryption key.

Re: Networking and update problems for windows XP
Here's something I've found for the wireless, not exactly sure it's the same thing. This problem has been happening since I got my new computer. My Dell Studio 1555.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...0175832AAcpP8o I get the icon in my systray sending a popup saying "windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network) thereafter I get an icon where if I mouse over it says validating identity and it never finishes, though I can still pull up web pages are read my email, use an instant message program, etc. It still shouldn't say that, it should say I'm connected to the network. Edit: And I have tried that solution in the link. My router doesn't seem to have that setting, it's a Dlink DGL-4500 and under Basic and wireless (I suppose you'd have to look at the manual to know what I'm talking about) it lists wireless security mode, the choice in the drop down menu are: WEP, WPA personal and WPA Enterprise. I chose personal, and it messed up the whole network. No one including me was able to get on, and I needed to buy an ethernet cable to directly access the router so we could change it. Maybe WPA has a different encryption key, which I don't know. I only know one encryption key. If I've forgotten some of the other ones where can I recover them? Re: Networking and update problems for windows XP
If the other computers in the house are losing connectivity after changing encryption, you may need to remove the wireless profile and then try to reconnect to the network.

Re: Networking and update problems for windows XP
I'm thinking there's another encryption key for WAP. There are 4 encryption keys listed under wireless, but not sure they are different. They are all 10 hex digits, the same amount of characters, and 64-bit- which leads me to believe they are all the same, however.

Re: Networking and update problems for windows XP[MOVED]
Try a factory default reset, then try configuring the encrpytion again.
Note: This will reset everything you have set in the router, including network keys (WEP, WPA etc.), time, filters etc, and restore the router completely to default settings. Take a paper clip, and push it in the reset button for 10-15 seconds.

Well, I solved it- I think.
I sent a quick email to Dlink. The person asked me to do this: Quote:
I just wonder what is different now then before I unchecked it, specifically. |

Actually, that box should always be empty for anything but a network that specifically has host based authentication (a RADIUS server), which your router does not have.
