Hey im on a 25gig per month plan with bigpond network. Anyways i was wondering is there is any method or program to limit speed to my download/upload speed so i dont use to much download(not completely stop internet). since my sister will not stop downloading on her laptop everyday(Around 1-2 gigs a day ***...). I would like to get the speed to around my cap speed which is around 8kb download and 56kb upload.

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
Hmm, I'm guessing you're the brother that sister was complaining about in another post? Regardless, you need to work things out between the two of you.
You may be able to get your ISP to reduce your bandwidth, but it will reduce the upload speed as well. |

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
Don't wish yourself to be on Bigponds capped speed, it will not open its own home page under five minutes you cannot use it on ebay you can't access gmail and so on,that is why I changed from there cable extreme to Optus.
You really have one Option available to you,you must strike some kind of a deal with your sister re usage quotas

I agree with Kodi in principle. Reducing bandwidth would not be on my options list. Other than restraint, there aren't many other options. How adventurous are you with Computers and Networking? Do you enjoy working/playing on them or with them? Do you have a technical aptitude? I ask because there is a way to replace the firmware on many home routers with Linux. It's called DD-WRT. And by doing that, you can control certain aspects of your connection. Click on the link here to take a look at the software and if your router is compatible. |

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
Try using a bandwidth limiter. I use Netlimiter 2, but if you would prefer a freeware solution try bandwidthcontroller.com or do a search for free (or freeware) bandwidth controller, bandwidth shaper, or traffic shaper. I'm sure you'll get plenty of other options (though I can't recommend any of them as I've never used any limiter other than Netlimiter).

If she's using that much BW then I wonder if what she's doing is even legal. Might wanna let her know how severe a penalty is in store if what she's doing is illegal.

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
Parents.
gateets Download limiter, thanks that the kind of thing i was looking for. it safe and easy to use right?. Also if i install it on one computer will it only effect that computer only? I Dont really trust those kinds of program Dont want to mess up settings or get a virus just to be sure ebackhus Ha hopefully that stops her. Maybe i was over exaggerating she uses around 1 gig, she downloads like music and comic scans

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
As stated previously, I use Netlimiter and have no experience with the other freeware programs; However, to the best of my knowledge, anything you run on your computer won't affect someone else's computer. But I don't think this is going to work if you install it on your computer: you will have to install it secretly on her computer. You need to limit HER bandwidth, not yours, otherwise she will just keep downloading at full speed. You might also want to take this issue up with your parents and see if they will do anything about the problem.

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
are there any other ISPs in the area that offer better deals?
You might be able to modify the QoS (Quality of Service) in the router.

Re: [Help]How to limit or slow your own internet speed
Sorry but your Parents pay for the Internet so it is them and them ONLY that can say who can use what bandwidth.
Just think yourself lucky that you are getting free internet. If you don't like the current setup pay for your own.
