Evil Can't access internet on router

Hey guys, I'm having a lot of trouble with a lot of crap at my new apartment, especially this fancy internet service they're making me pay for.
The internet here is distributed through a local switch/router somewhere in my apartment building. From the switch/router, it is funneled into several Ethernet ports throughout my room. Of course I want wireless, so I go out and buy a Linksys WRT54GL with thoughts of 3rd party firmware dancing in my head. I take my new baby home and try to get it working before I make the mods, but when I get almost all the way through the setup CD, it tells me that the router can't see the internet.
Stunned and amazed, I plug the the Ethernet from the wall into my computer and see that my laptop is getting internet, but not my router. I called the support line and the guy there told me to do all sorts of top level jargon that most definitely wouldn't solve anything.
Flustered, I did the only thing I knew how to do in these cases; got drunk. The router itself is fine, reset factory defaults. Firmware is normal and up to date. The IP i get from the the apartments router/switch is a 192.168.0.###, with DNS servers and such, and subneted 255.255.255.0, blah blah blah...

If any one can provide any suggestions, help, anything, I would greatly appreciate it, and you would probably save me from alcohol poisoning

Re: Can't access internet on router

Because you are already getting an IP address starting with 192.168, the only thing you need to change is your routers type from "gateway" to "router." You should be able to get a connection with the default settings, and you can go from there. This setting is usually under "Advanced Routing."

Re: Can't access internet on router

Finally figured that out like an hour ago, but thanks anyway! I appreciate the effort!
