Hamachi virtual adapter is breaking my internet

I'll keep this as simple as possible, given the situation.

A friend and I recently discovered Hamachi and began playing games over it. This morning we found out the C&C Generals wasn't working over it, and after some research online, I found a forum post that led me to believe that this would help solve our problem.

I'll admit right here, while I understand the hardware aspect of computers, I can't tell which way is up when it comes to networking. Regardless, I went through that walkthrough, after which we realized that it didn't actually help. Afterwards, my friend had to go, so I tried surfing the internet, which kept giving me the "Looking up x.com" and then timing out. Oddly enough, uTorrent and the Steam friends popups worked fine during this, while Firefox, IE and AIM all wouldn't respond.

I eventually was able to solve the problem by simply disabling the Hamachi virtual adapter under Network Connections. When it is disabled and my primary connection to my router is enabled, internet works fine. As soon as I turn the Hamachi one on, everything breaks again.

I've looked through numerous pages, tried messing with proxy settings, firewall settings, and router settings, and I can't seem to get Hamachi to work again.

Basically my questions are:
1) What did I do and how can I prevent myselfdoing stupid stuff like it ever again?
2) Can Hamachi be fixed without a complete reformat, and if so, how?

Like I said, the internet works again, so this isn't some dramatic issue, but I'd really like to be able to play online games over VPN again, and Hamachi was great for the few days that it worked.
