Home networking XP Home and XP Professional[MOVED]
Gudday all
I am trying to get my home PC (XP Home) networked via either Ethernet or wireless to our laptop (XP Pro). I seem to have done all the sharing & permissions, naming of domains correctly. It has worked once, though I note that the laptop could access the PC but not vice-versa. By once I mean that when I turn the PC or laptop off and come back later the networking does not work. I can see the shared folders on the PC via Win explorer using my laptop but when I try to open them it takes a long time to respond and then I get a pop-up window that says that I do not have permissions to access these folders and the path cannot be found. If I clear the entries and start again then it will work the once again then fail. I am at my wits end and am beginning to believe that XP Home on the PC is the problem but don't know what to do next. Has anyone got XP Home to talk to XP Professional and what did you do?

Re: Home networking XP Home and XP Professional
hi tigers!,
couple of questions you said domain, did you mean workgroup? xp pro by default will use the WORKGROUP workgroup. xp home by default will use the MSHOME workgroup. make sure these are the same. start > run > type in firewall.cpl and hit enter click on the exceptions tab and make sure File and Printer Sharing is checked. what is the computer name of xp pro and xp home? start > run > type in sysdm.cpl and hit enter computer name is on Computer Name tab. |

Atavist
Thank you for your answers. I checked those items and they are affirmative. On a wild fling I turned off Windows firewall on the PC and viola I could see the PC from the laptop .Though doubtless that is not a good idea as the internet connection for the house is attached to the PC. Is XP Home the problem? Or is there some way to tweak the PCs firewall to let my laptop in?

Re: Home networking XP Home and XP Professional
just to make sure i'm on the same page:
you can browsed XP Pro from XP Home but not vice versa. i get that right? ok. and on the firewall of XP Home File and Printer Sharing is enabled? that is interesting. on the XP Pro box, if you go to start and click on run and then type in \\computername where computername is the name of your xp home box, what do you get? |

). They are called
When I click on either the laptop wanders off for an inordinate amount of time until it eventually returns a message that says 'You do not have permissions to access these resoucres .....' and also 'Network Path not found'. This only occurs when the PC's f/w is on. I do not have a screen shot and I am at work while writing this. Last night I used my laptop to access the PC but I had to remove the internet connection avoid the possibility of viruses etc:

Re: Home networking XP Home and XP Professional[MOVED]
A couple of questions
1. I have a DSL router that sits between the PC and the bad outside world. Do I even need a f/w? 2. On the Windows f/w there is an option to block all incoming connections. If I select that will that allow the laptop to see the PC even if the f/w is turned on?

Re: Home networking XP Home and XP Professional[MOVED]
you should keep the windows firewall on. no, checking block all incoming connections will not help.
one thing i would recommend for this kind of set up is to have both computers use the same username and same password. this will allow one to authenticate to the other without issue. |

The laptop has a password but the PC does not
