Need help networking computers with different OS's

Okay, so I know this is possible because between 3 computers 2 of them were linked in the way I am trying to link the 3rd computer. In my household we have an internet cable running upstairs and down stemming from the downstairs computer with the modem which runs windows xp. I want to access the internet on the upstairs computer which runs ubuntu but simply plugging it in doesn't work and I can't navigate microsoft's network creation options. The other computer was working in this way but that computer no longer works so I need to figure this out. I'm not greatly familiar with ubuntu but it seems much more user friendly so I'm open to any advice. Thank you.

Do you have a router tied in to the internet?

Re: Need help networking computers with different OS's

I see a Local Area Connection that is functioning. Whenever I run the network setup I just get the message about using a boot or XP disc on the other computer and am never able to complete it. How do I search for other computers on the network?

I still don't know what works and what doesn't. Is this a Ubuntu question? Does it have Internet connectivity?

Re: Need help networking computers with different OS's

Well the Windows computer has internet and I am trying to figure out how I set the network up from the ubuntu computer end. All I can do is get the Windows computer to say I need to run setup wizard or use an xp disc on the other comp and nothing happens.

Re: Need help networking computers with different OS's

Are you sure the cable running up to the computer is connected and functional? Have you tested that cable and router port using a working computer?
