ISP IP Address & Local Addresses
"m pretty new to networking so I hope you don't mind my question.
I know your ISP assigns you an IP address, it could be static or dynamic depending on the ISP. But the moment you attach a router, such as a wireless router, if its set to DHCP, it starts assigning IP addresses based on a set range. Am I correct so far? I know the range by which it assigns addresses is predefined by the router and is configurable, but my question is how websites see your IP address. Does the site only see the IP address the ISP assigned, or does it see some more defining characteristics like DHCP assigned local address or perhaps the computer name associated with the local ip address? Basically I'm asking, is your ISP assigned IP the only thing a website sees or can they distinguish your computer on the local network, from someone else's? The reason I ask is because I share the wireless with other people in this house, and I just caught one of the people viewing obscene material on some pr0n site. Normally I wouldn't care, but the fact is they're sharing my internet and I don't feel like getting in trouble for something they view on their computers on my network. |
