Ad-Hoc network with 2 wireless adapters?

Hello. What I am attempting to do is setup a machine that exists strictly as a repeater for a wireless signal.

Here is what I wish to do.

It is a desktop that has a high powered wireless usb adapter plugged into it which receives my schools wireless signal. It then has a second wireless adapter which establishes a new ad-hoc network. This new network, being broad casted from our dorm, will give us better range throughout the place, and allow us to be mobile and share the internet with our 2 other laptops,

The reason for this setup is the 2 laptops have weak wireless adapters which cannot get an good signal from all parts of the dorm.

So far as I can tell, ad-hoc networks only work if you have the host computer PLUGGED in, and then a wireless card spitting the signal back out again. Is it possible with TWO wireless cards doing everything?

Or is there a better means to solve this problem with a different strategy/hardware?

The desktop that has the wireless equipment plugged into it is running windows xp home SP2.
