My System

Internet suddenly and mysteriously and completely dead

Recently my screen started to be garbled with yellow/blue/white/red dots. I went to the ATI Overdrive screen in the ATI Control Center to check the GPU temp (which was fine--55C), and while I was there I decided to run Auto-Tune (runs tests to calibrate overclock/fan settings) for no reason in particular. As soon as I did, all my downloads, chat apps, etc. stopped and I soon confirmed that I was completely disconnected from the internet.

I include the above information even though I can't fathom it having any connection to my problem because the timing is simply too unlikely to ignore (I've never had a single problem connecting to the internet here for over a year).

Anyway, I spent a good day trying to get connected again to no avail.

First I checked all the physical connections between my router (I-O DATA IEEE802.11g/b Wireless LAN router WN-G54/R4) and ethernet port (integrated Marvel Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller).

Then I unplugged the cable from my ethernet port and plugged it into another computer, where it worked fine.

Then I did ipconfig release and renew, and it never was able to acquire a network address and had "Limiteded or no connectivity". Then I manually input an IP address under TCP/IP properties and it showed up as "connected" but still wasn't connecting to anything.

Then I ran some winsock2 fixes (LSPFIX.EXE and WINSOCKFIX.EXE), but still nothing.

So finally I gave up and bought a network card (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC), figuring it'd be worth the wasted case space to get it over with, but I still get the exact same problem.

I'm really at my wits' end... Thanks to anyone who has any ideas what I might try next.

Re: Internet suddenly and mysteriously and completely dead

Well, apparently turning on the ridiculous cluster of individually-brick-powered boxes that compose the "modem" in a certain order before lastly turning on the router somehow fixed my problem according to the Monday phone operator (the Friday one hadn't included that in her troubleshooting schpeel). I'm skeptical that's all that was involved, but all's well that ends well I suppose.
