Sharing XP Dial-Up With A Vista??
HELP!!
okay here is my problem: I have one computer, an XP laptop, which has a dial-up internet connection. I recently got a Vista desktop, and wish to share the dial-up connection to it. So i purchased a (phoneline-like) cable that runs from the network adapter on my Vista to the network adapter on the XP. Problems: -My Vista says it has 'modem unavailable' and 'adapter not connected' and also 'Local Area Connection' cable is disconncted -The computers don't recognise each other -Although they are connected by the network cable, no matter how i try they don't recognise each other and both insist that there is a cable disconnected I have tried EVERYTHING and i am in desperate need of any available help:) thankyou in advance to anyone who replies. |

Re: Sharing XP Dial-Up With A Vista??
You'll need to use Internet Connection Service (ICS). Find tutorials in the Help and Support Center and/or via web search.
Briefly, configure the modem/router as an ethernet switch and wireless access point (the secondary router in the procedure below). You can use the IP address suggested, and you will not need a cross-over cable. The computer with the dial-up access will need an ethernet or wireless connection to the newly configured router. You enable ICS on the dial-up connection. All your other computers than connect to the router just as when you had broadband (except that the ICS computer is really what is acting as a router). JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows. Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together. Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected! |
