[SOLVED] New build and win install, cannot connect

Hi guys.

I just concluded building my first PC with an install of Windows XP Pro x64.

My old PC (store bought Compaq) connected to my Netgear router (itself connected to a Virgin cable modem) pretty much automatically but this was a long while ago so I don't know how it was set up.

Anyway now I have this new build I am kind of stuck getting online. I have used the wizards there and when it completes it makes no changes. The disk I got had Service Pack 2 installed too if that helps.

I have the router connected to the PC by Ethernet cable. How do I get Windows to go online from here? I know it might seem kind of a basic thing to be stuck on but really this is not something I have configured before. Opening the Network connections I see only one under the header: 'LAN or Highspeeed Internet'

The connection is called:
1394 Connection
Connected, Firewalled
1394 Net Adapter

And the icon shows the usual network icon, but there is a small padlock in the top right of the icon too.

Also, I am not sure if it matters but there are 2 ethernet ports on the motheboard. Could I have it plugged in wrong? It does detect the network as being connected.

Any help would be great. :)

Hello

Did you install all hardware device drivers???

It seems that you don't have network card device installed.

Open Device Manager and check if you have any yellow question marks or exclamation points next to hardware devices.

1394 Connection is firewire connection.
You need to have Local Area Connection or LAN.

Keep us posted.

Ahh yes I looked there and I see 4 question marks. Two of them for Ethernet Controller, one for SM Bus Controller andone for Audio Device on High Definition Audio Controller.

I did not get any disks that I can see with the motherboard though. I will check again but if not I assume I can get these drivers online somewhere?

Re: New build and win install, cannot connect

OK... *blush* my bad. I do have a disk. Running it now and will see what happens but it lists 'network drivers' on the front of the disk. It had slipped between some other random papers and stickers provided with the motherboard and I missed it. If I had seen this I would not have assumed that network adapter drivers were generic and provided with windows. :p

Ethernet Controller is Network Device which will allow you to hook your PC with router.
You need to install network card drivers.
If you can not find Motherboard CD, check on Motherboard for make/model.
You can easily download Motherboard drivers from manufacturers Web Site.

Keep us posted.

Re: New build and win install, cannot connect

It's ok it is working now. I put the disk in that Gigabyte provided and installed the network drivers and it found the ethernet ports and listed them and automatically connected to the router I have. All online now and browser finds websites. Thanks for the nudge. :)
