EEK! Limited connectivity (vista)

I am having problems connecting to the wlan using my vista laptop in my new place. There is 3 other laptops running xp accessing the wlan with no problems, i have tried various things like turning off ipv6 but to no avail. Done the usual turn off router but still nothing.

I have also tried diagnosing the probem but all it says is that i have limited or no connectivity.

I have had 1 of the xp laptops beside the vista 1 to ensure that all the settings are the same.

The security type is a 'no authentication (open) witha WEP encryption' The signal type is excellent at all times.

Hopefully someone can help!!!

Below is the results after doing the ipconfig /all:

How do i do that? Is it a setting or is it a physical switch i need to change?

I dont have the make/model number of the router to hand and forgot to check what it was but the internet is through talktalk and its a white router. Dont know if that helps any, probably not!

Re: Limited connectivity (vista)

go into you router setting so iin your web browser type the ip address of your router typicaly its 192.168.1.1 but you can check this by doing ipconfig on one of the computers that are connected

under wireless setup disable your security

check on you vista machine that your tcp/ip setting are all set to dhcp enabled

Re: Limited connectivity (vista)

yeh you must do this on one of the laptops that work

cause your vista laptop is not connecting you will not be able to see it unless you plug it straight into your router

Re: Limited connectivity (vista)

yes this will make your network unprotected but only for the a min while you test it

when you have disabled it and check that your router is set as a dhcp server try to connect with your vista machine if this works you then know that your wep is the problem and can be fixed

Re: Limited connectivity (vista)

I wouldn't worry too much about disabling the security, WEP is very unsecure and can be cracked in a short amount of time. I've also had problems with WEP in the past, so I wouldn't put it past it being the problem.

If you find out that WEP is the problem, I would suggest changing to WPA2 with AES encryption if all of your computers and wireless devices support it.

Re: Limited connectivity (vista)

I have a similar problem - We have 3 desktops and 2 laptops all running vista and connected wirelessly to our Linkskys router. However the new Dell desktop that arrived yesterday which has pretty much the same set up as the others refuses to connect.

I've tried the solution of disabling the WEP encryption and it connects fine however when I put the encryption back on i can't get past the key entry page.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless card and working though window's diagnosed and repair options with no luck.

Any ideas?

when your setting wireless security it is best plug your ethernet cable in and set it up that way

Ignore that post above!

When i disabled the security it did allow me to connect using the vista laptop, i presume this then means that there is something up with the security key?

So you would suggest doing this then?

To do this is it a case of changing the settings on the router and then going onto everything that accesses the router and manualy changing the settings to that of the new setup?
