Hey all never done much networking but im trying to read up on it, i just setup a connection between to desktop computers in the house, so now i can access files between the two and use the printer etc.
They both use wireless cards, and both are on a wireless network (I have an ADSL wireless router/Modem). Now all is well and good, everything works OK. but i was reading up that if the IP addresses are set as Obtain automatically, it takes longer for opening the network folders, and starting up etc. So i saw on the net that you should assign it manually? is this correct? Well anyway im not sure if ive done it right or what not but i do IPconfig and i get: IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 and IP: 192.168.1.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 for the other computer. Do i change the TCP/IP settings on the wireless network card to that? and alsio what do i put in the DNS server? cheers all, any info would be great. |

Re: General Networking support (two computers)
DNS to 192.168.1.1 should work, although its just going to forward everything to the addresses your modem has, so it shouldn't hurt to go ahead and set those. However, honestly you shouldn't notice any different whether you set these manually or not. Unless there is some issue, the systems will get the IPs fast. Up to you.
