Using home internet at a Hotel.
Someone was telling me that they had set up their laptop computer to where if they were using a hotels free WIFI that he could access his router and use his internet at home. Is this possible? I know that if you know the routers IP then you can send certain items but how would you use the internet from home? If anyone could answer this please let me know.
Thanks, Hunt1153 |

Re: Using home internet at a Hotel.
I know that window's xp and vista have a remote connection ability. As long as it is activated on the home pc you should be able to access it from anywhere with an internet connection. I have never used it but I have used the remote assistance to help my mother in law with something on her computer. If it works the same way then its like setting right in front of the home computer. You can see everything, and access everything. That would be the only way I can think that he is able to do that.

Re: Using home internet at a Hotel.
What are you wanting to do exactly? As Jesiand mentioned, you can use Remote Desktop to connect to your PC at home (there are also other software packages you can buy such as GoToMyPC). This allows you to use it just as you would if you were sitting there, although it will be a bit slow. This transfers commands to your computer and it sends back the results to your screen. Just keep in mind, you are still using the hotel's internet connection to do this. If you connect to your home system from the hotel, you are making an incoming connection through your home ISP into your system. If you then open Internet Explorer remotely on the home PC and go to a website, it is requesting the page from your home ISP as it normally would if you were sitting there. The results then go to that computer, and then get sent to you at the hotel. It is different because the data is all getting sent in the same format; something for your current screen to display rather then specific data such as a web page.
Anyway, this was a rather large explanation and maybe more than you wanted. Just wanted to let you know how it works to see if it's what you are after. |

Re: Using home internet at a Hotel.
There is also another program you can use on your computer called Hamachi . You set it up on both computers, and it's free. go to "logmein.com" and look for the standard version. you can also opt for a business class for a fee. It works great and you just use remote desktop to get your ip address. install on both computers and you can transfer files, etc.

Re: Using home internet at a Hotel.
He may be able to connect to the machines on his network but he can't use the internet connection at home. Think about it you are connecting to it over the internet just to use the internet.
