Hello all,
This is my first post so please be gentle. I am anewbie at diagnosing networking problems. I have an older winfast computer, with a sis 900-based networking adapter. Onboard LAN. Cable modem (business connection). running windows XP Prof. I cannot for the life of me get the LAN card to power up. pinging 127.0.0.1 gets response. no other ping gets response. Shows " Media Disconnected" Cable is fine. works great with other computer. Reset computer and re installed all drivers from Manufacture. FOXCON. All was working fine till had to wipe hard drive and reinstall windows. can anyone help please???? I've tried everything I can think of. I installed a newr lan card, but it doesn't power it up either. it sees it in device manager, but says "cable unplugged" Thanks, Wireman |

Re: no power to Lan
Make sure you plug the network cable into the correct port. If it says cable disconnected. It's not getting the physical connection. And you have tried plugging that end of the cable to another computer?

Re: no power to Lan
If you have onboard lan and a card installed you will have 2 connection ports, do you still have the card installed?
Do you have any yellow question marks in Device Manager? What issue caused you to have to reinstall Windows? |

Re: no power to Lan
I took the card out as it really didn't help things. No yellow ? marks.. The original owner had a varus so I wiped the hard drive. installed windows and installed all drivers for the motherboard. The card is seen, but I used the SIW program and it told me the card is powered off. I've tried other drivers, but I can't get the card to power up. Bios shows enabled. no light from the port. aaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Re: no power to Lan
Sounds like the onboard is dead if it's enabled in the Bios and you don't get a light.
Try disabling in the bios start up/shut down re-enable/restart see if it shows up. If not reinstall the card/ disable the onboard on boot and see if the card is recognized. |

Re: no power to Lan
The NICs don't last forever, so it is most likely a hardware failure.

Well, I don't really know what's wrong but when I took the computer home, and plugged in the cable from my dsl, it started working just fine. upload all updates, etc. able to surf, it worked great. took it back to work and still, no connection to this line..
Oh well... |
