Smile Connect to the net through a computer

Hey, I was wondering if it is possible to conect to the internet from computer B through Computer A.

Computer A connects to the internet through a Modem/Router by an ethernet cable.
Also Computer A has 2 ethernet ports, one which is built into the motherboard, and one which is a NETGEAR FA310TX ethernet card.

I have 2 ethernet cables, yellow cable which is plugged into onboard ethernet port in Computer A, and a blue cable, which on one end is plugged into the ethernet card of computer A, and the other end is plugged inot an onboard ethernet port of computer B.

Despite the blue cable's connection, both network adapters which the blue cable is plugged into, shows that "A network cable is unplugged".

Can you please help me to connect computer B to computer A at least, or if possible traffic the network packets from Computer B to Computer A and then to the Modem/Router, thus allowing internet connection for Computer B.

By the way, computer A's OSs are Ubuntu 9.04 and Windowns XP Pro sp3.
And Computer B's OSs are Slackware 12.2, BackTrack 4 Pre-Final and Windows XP Pro sp3.

If possible I would like all my OSs on Computer B to be able to connect to the internet as I described earlier.

But first off it would be better to concentrate on Windows OSs, so I request your help for Windows networking first.

Thanks in advance

Re: Connect to the net through a computer

It is indeed. It's been a while since I did anything like this as ethernet switches are so cheap, but IIRC, I believe that the process goes something like this:
  1. On the laptop with the internet connection select your internet connection.
  2. Right click on it and select properties.
  3. The connection properties dialog box should be appear.
  4. Select the Advanced or Sharing tab (Can't remember which).
  5. Check Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection.
  6. Ensure that the two options below are unchecked.
  7. Click the OK button. This will give you a message stating that IP address of present working PC will be set to 192.168.0.1.
  8. Click OK (If you assigned this address to any other computer then change it to a different IP address otherwise it will generate an IP addressing conflict error).
  9. Now a hand icon should appear below the connection, indicating that it has been shared.
  10. Connect a crossover cable between the two laptops.
  11. Go to the other laptop, right click on your LAN connection and select properties.
  12. In the LAN properties dialog box select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  13. Click the properties button.
  14. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties dialog should appear.
  15. Assign an IP address of 192.168.0.2 or higher.
  16. Assign the Default Gateway and DNS Server IP as 192.168.0.1.

NB: You'll need to make sure that your internet connection on the first laptop is on an IP range other than 192.168.0.0 /24. For instance: 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0. This shouldn't be an issue if the first laptop has a dial-up connection though.

If this doesn't work let me know.

Regards,

Pro

Re: Connect to the net through a computer

You can also simply bridge the connections if this is a router that the first machine is connected to. This is simpler, and it doesn't introduce the second NAT layer of ICS.

Re: Connect to the net through a computer

Alright, nevermind, I connected my PC different way, straigh to my router xD .
It appeared that if I drill a hole in my wall to my office, I can just get my blue ethernet cable to reach my modem/router.

But anyway, thanks for your help, if I need to bridge connections I would now know how to do it :)

EDIT:

and PromescuesFire, your method didn't work.. Windows did different things when I followed your method and gave me different outcomes and dialog boxes.

Re: Connect to the net through a computer

The direct connection to the router is the right way in any case.
