Sharing a Dial up Over datalink DI614+
Does anybody know how, or if you can share a dial up Internet access over a DI614+ router? I have already enabled internet sharing on the host computer but I think somehthing in the router is blocking the internet connection from going through the router to the client computer. The client computer is a laptop on a wireless connection to the router.

Usually routers are designed to route a broadband internet connection. To do this they use what is called NAT (Network Address Translation). In order for NAT to work properly the router must act as a DHCP server and hand out IP Addresses to the other computers on the network. In this scenario you want to enable SOFTWARE internet connection sharing in which your software (You should post the software you are using.) wants to act as the DHCP server and also probably wants the 192.168.0.1 for itself as the standard DHCP server on a small network usually has this address.
>>> To fix your problem you need to go into the configuration of your router, DISABLE DHCP, and set the router to use 192.168.0.2 as an IP address instead of 192.168.0.1. Then try your internet connection sharing software again... <<< If you have any more trouble you will need to post your OS's on all computers and the MAKE of your router (not just model), and the software you are using for ICS (ie. Windows ICS). Thank you , Rusty B. |

I don't know about this particular model, but my SMC Barricade has dial back-up capability, and I can have it automatically dial if the broadband connection is not present. Other than it's painfully slow, the transition is pretty seamless. I also used a dial-up proxy server from Multi-Tech for several years that did the same job as the broadband router.

os and router
Both the laptop and the desktop have win xp. I also am using the windows inernet sharing. The router is a d-link. If i disable the dhcp I would also have to assign each computer a ip address correct. If you have any more suggestions i would surely appreciate it. Thanks much.
