[SOLVED] FTP using Port Forwading

I am trying to access a device that has a built in ftp server. I can access it on the local lan or through a vpn. I can't seem to access it from outside using the ftp command in xp-command prompt. I can get to using file explorer, but not from the ftp open command. I have portforwarding setup to forward an ftp request at port 8303 to port 21 on the device.

Any have any ideas.

Thanks

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

Why would the FTP come in port 8303? Are you sure your router does the translation between different ports?

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

I use port forwarding all time. It's a cisco pix 501.

The thing I find strange is that I can access it from IE. using ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8303, but I can't use xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8303 to open a session using FTP> or even using FTP Commander.

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

Try downloading and installing the PF port checker to see if the ports are really open.

Aren't the ports open if I can get to the address from outside using ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8303 in explorer

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

Do you know if the FTP command in DOS excepts the format;

ftp>open xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8303
?
I use this format so other devices behind the firewall can use the standard ports. This is a device not a true pc, but since it goes into other peoples' lans I don't like using standard ports. The device is still using port 21, but any call for the ftp protocol on port 8303 get send directly to that device.

I do that same thing with HTML and remote desktop calls, I've never had a problem using it.

I just can't figure out how I can get to it using IE and not a FTP Client.

By the way, I checked and the ports are open.

Any ideas? I'd love to hear them.

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

I have not used the FTP command in DOS, so I can't really say.

Re: FTP using Port Forwading

I finally got it to work in FTP Commander and a couple of other clients, but I still haven't gotten it to work in DOS.

I just may be that DOS can't take the port redirection. I will consider this thread closed.

Thanks for all the help.

Jim
