Wireless Connection
Hi,
I setup a wireless connection with my high speed modem with a linksys router for use with my laptop. The desktop connects but, the laptop does not work for surfing. It says it's connected on the unsecured network but, nothing works as if connected and there is the red X. All the cables seem to be hooked up correctly. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Jeremy |

Re: Wireless Connection
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc. Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.
On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key: PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless Connection
Hi,
The name of the isp is Suddenlink, The modem is Linksys and model number is: befcmu10. For the router it's Linksys and number is: wrt110 I can't connect on the secured or unsecured network. The secured is wpa2-psk. The browser is IE7. When I try to connect with my laptop and select a network the only one it says it's connected to is the unsecured one but, it's doesn't connect. |

Re: Wireless Connection
Can you provide the info being asked by johnwill and louge? It will be very helpful. :)
And also, are you certain that you're typing the correct wpa2-psk on the right device? and where did you see that Red X? Try wpa-psk instead of using wpa2-psk. |

Re: Wireless Connection
Hi,
In the list to choose a network it has both encryption and without. But, everytime I try the encryption one and type the security key it doesn't work. When I try the unsecured network it says it connects and the red x is gone from the taskbar but, it's not connected for internet. I don't know how to go back to change the info for the networks if it's not correct. The desktop works and is connected wired. |

Re: Wireless Connection
you still did not tell us how your wireless router in your home is setup! is it setup unecrypted or encrypted requiring a WEP key to be entered??
try the below tip from Lorjack and see if it solves your problem Re: Can't connect to the internet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reset the TCP/IP stack in addition to WINSOCK entries. Windows XP Open up a command prompt (Start > Run > CMD) Type the bolded commands in the command prompt window: Reset TCP/IP Stack: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries: netsh winsock reset catalog When finished reboot If it still doesn't connect then Supply the following information please. OS running on all affected systems Make & models of all equipment (routers, network cards, modems). Wired or wireless? What wireless encryption is in use? (WPA, WPA2, WEP, None) Browsers being used (Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera,...) What security software is installed? (Firewalls, AV, Spyware, Malware,...) Open up a command prompt (Start > run > cmd) Type the following bolded commands and post the results for each affected machine. ipconfig /all ping www.google.com ping 74.125.53.99 Note: To post results of commands, alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > select all > alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > copy > paste in a message here. If you are on a computer that can't connect to the internet then paste the contents in a text document and save it to a portable media like a flash drive, then use an internet capable machine to post the contents. __________________ Those who can't write, write manuals. Re: Wireless Connection
You need to logon to your routers web interface and check the configuration!
It sounds like you haven't configured your router and could be trying to connect to a neighbouring network.

Re: Wireless Connection
Hi,
When I turn on my laptop I have to select a network to connect. One of them is called linksys and it's a security-enabled network. It has the best signal but, i can't connect cause when I type in the security key it says it doesn't match. The security type for that connection is wpa2-psk and 802.11n The other connection is unsecured and is called default it's 802.11g neither of these when selected will connect. So I tried connecting the cable directly from my modem to my laptop and still no connection. I used to be setup with another isp and was able to use it wireless. I haven't been able to post the info not having my flash drive yet after moving to a new residence. I'm wondering if it's not setup correctly between the modem and router or maybe the setting on the laptop. |

Re: Wireless Connection
You're looking at 2 different networks there! Only one of 'em is yours!
You really need to get access to the routers web interface to verify settings and if needs be (which seems highly likely at this point) to reset your WPA pass-phrase. Might be an idea to reset the router to factory defaults.

Re: Wireless Connection
It'll be similar to the procedure that rattle snake details in his post: problem with my connection.
Although, you'll need the username and password if you don't perform a factory reset.

Re: Wireless Connection
Hi,
I went through the process and changed some settings and also added the laptop to the linksys easylink adviser. The laptop connects and is able to surf now but, when I first turn it on and it connects it disconnects the desktop then they both connect. |
