Internet goes in and out

Hey guys

My problem is that my wireless internet and internet through ethernet cord goes in and out all the time. It will work for about 5 minutes then cut out for a few minutes and it does this repeatedly. I am using a linksys WRT54G2 wireless router which worked perfectly when I lived in an apartment but just moved back in with my parents after i graduated college and now all this is happening. We have a windstream speedster modem(i think) and have tried changing the channel on the wireless router but it still does the same thing. I tried to include as much information as possible but if more is needed please ask. Thanks!

Re: Internet goes in and out

Connect directly to the modem and see if you still get disconnected.

Re: Internet goes in and out

If I connect straight to the modem it works fine. I just dont see what would be causing the interuption on the signal. Right now it is set to channel 11 and the only cordless phones we have in the house are 5.8GHz.

Re: Internet goes in and out

Some things you can try here, listed in the order you should try them.
  1. For wireless connections, remove all the stored wireless profiles and search for networks. You'll have to enter the encryption key again, which is sometimes the issue for connection problems.
  2. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  3. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  4. Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.
  5. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  6. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: Internet goes in and out

I've tried most of the steps that johnwill gave me and I will see how the wireless works tonight. But do you have any idea why the wireless would work perfectly for a year and then when I move it just acts sporacticaly.

Re: Internet goes in and out

Change in environment, which can heavily affect a wireless network.
