XP Server Problems[MOVED]
I work for a small company and by default have become the computer guy. I have set up the network here and besides a few bugs here and there I've been able to keep it running for a few years. Yesterday the power went out and since than I haven't been able to get 2 of the 6 computers connected to the network. Yesterday everything was fine, today when I came in all the server info on the server computer was gone, file sharing was turned off as if by magic. I connected 4 of the computers with little trouble but the last two just won't go. I have XP Professional on the server and XP Home on all the other machines. I have turned off all the firewalls and the strange thing is when I try to setup up the network the windows firewall instantly comes back on. I turned it off by right clicking it and by going into services.msc and turning it off and disabling it on startup. On one machine I uninstalled windows firewall hoping that would help, but of course it didn't. Nothing works. The two computers I can't connect can ping the serverand all other machines in the network and they can ping those two machines back. I can see no machines when I try to map the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been working on this for most of the day with no success. Thanks for the help.

Re: XP Server Problems
did you try disabling the firewall on the server (computer running XP Pro) while trying to connect these last two computers to the network?
Also did you think of reinstalling Network Services with the Windows XP install disc. if not give it a try go to start > control panel > add or remove programs > Then on the left look for add/remove windows components uncheck network services then recheck it. click next it will rebuild your network files and might ask for O.S. install disc. Then reboot computer and retry connecting to network.... post back with update, see where your at with this problem...

Re: XP Server Problems
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes the firewall is turned off on the server computer running XP Pro. I did not try reinstalling Network Services. I will try that tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
I reinstalled the network services, but it had no effect. I turn off the firewall on the workstation and as soon as I setup the network the "Local Area Connection" is "firewalled" The firewall stays off until I try to setup a network and thats when it turns on and I believe stops me from connecting. Thanks for the help, anymore suggestions?

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
I'm still looking for help. A little more info, I can connect to the internet through both workstations, I have released and renewed the ip address multiple times and still no luck. Every time I try to setup the network, the firewall I turned off turns back on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
The symptoms suggest there is some other application interfering with the settings. I've never seen the Windows firewall turn itself on after I turned it off.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
The only security program was an antivirus I can't remember the name but it had a firewall and a stuff. It was giving me trouble so I uninstalled it. There is no other antivirus or firewall on that machine now.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
start > run > msconfig > startup tab > start unchecking programs one at a time then reboot until you find the culprit. If you don't know what the program is then do a google search and there is plenty of information on it.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
No offense but I'm not a complete idiot, I already checked for programs that could be doing this. There is nothing checked in the startup tab in msconfig. I'm ready to just reinstall windows, if this can't be fixed.

Re: XP Server Problems[MOVED]
Never thought you were. Next do services and make sure that you check the "hide all Microsoft services" check box.
