Before going through reinstalling the OS my wife took the computer to a shop. No sooner than she got home (about 20-25 min) than the phone rang for her to pick the computer up. The problem, he said, was more common to Dell laptops than other brands. The explanation on the receipt follows.
"Dell wireless utility was blocking the wireless connection, disabled the wireless utility and made Windows configure the wireless connection."

Curious that the wireless utility was an issue when a wired connection didn't work. That should have no effect on wired connections.
