I changed my IP by using a program. After that, I had no internet connection, but it said I was connected to my linksys router. This is on a laptop.
THINGS I HAVE TRIED: 1) ipconfig /release SHOWS: The requested operation requires elevation 2)ipconfig /renew SHOWS: The support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address family. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected. 3)ipconfig SHOWS(roughly -- lots of stuff to type from laptop to this computer): Connection-specific DNS Suffix : -- Link-local IPv6 Address : fe80::f836 blah blah blah Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.159.255 Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway : -- Media State : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix : hosts.bc1.bresnan.net ...so on and soforth about media being disconnected. Alright, so I am very confused about all of this. My ip address isn't even an ip address for one thing. I can write more, but this should be enough to start. I would REALLY appreciate the help. Oh yeah, just to let you know, I have tried reseting the router and also unplugging it. |

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Try doing the correct stack reset first, not the XP one. Also note that you MUST open the command prompt as an administrator.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista. Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Not quite, but I got some different results. Let me make sure you know this is from the SECOND time I tried (after rebooting): this was run as an administrator.
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Windows\system32>netsh winsock reset catalog The system cannot find the file specified. C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied. Reseting Interface, OK! A reboot is required to complete this action. C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied. There's no user specified settings to be reset. ______________________ The first time had a bunch of Ok's for the second and third commands, which gave me some hope. I feel like I'm really close here, johnwill. I saw a lot of your other posts on this general subject and It really seems like you know a lot, so I'm counting on you! Also, what is the correct stack reset? Last edited by CrashingThunder; 06-29-2009 at 09:44 AM. |

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
you can not use a 169.254.0.0/16 IP address. it is used for fail over local connectivity only. Will need to change to something different to access the net.
"Address autoconfiguration RFC 3330 defines an address block, 169.254.0.0/16, for the special use in link-local addressing for IPv4 networks. In IPv6, every interface, whether using static or dynamic address assignments, also receives a local-link address automatically in the fe80::/10 subnet. These addresses are only valid on the link, such as a local network segment or point-to-point connection, that a host is connected to. These addresses are not routable and like private addresses cannot be the source or destination of packets traversing the Internet." From Wiki.. |

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
So what exactly do I do. I think that If I can either FIND or CREATE this netsh winsock reset catalog file, then I'll be getting somewhere. So what could I change it to, and how?

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Sorry, i reread it again and i guess i might have been confused. are you trying to setup a static IP address to 169. what ever, or are trying to get it back to DHCP. if you are trying to get the connection back to DHCP have you tried right clicking the connection and changing the TCP/IP properties back to DHCP? If you are setup with a static IP address renewing it will only get back your static IP address.

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
I changed my IP via program, and I didn't know what I had previously. Then I did millions of other things to try and fix it, and probably screwed it up more. I'm waiting for JohnWill to show up with his response. :D

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Well, I think Jonwill took you down the wrong path to begin with. If you need a static ip address you will change it in the same place. (the TCP/IP properties of the wirelless adapter connection)
Most Linksys routers start their IP address range that they push out via DHCP at 192.168.0.100, so if you want a static IP address that will work i would try 192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0, default gateway of 192.168.0.1, and DNS 192.168.0.1 if you can use the same program and select this as your ip address i would try that and see what happens. |

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Question, Is there a reason you want to switch between four IP addresses?
I believe what is happening is the router is rejecting the IP address setting. Is there a way you could get into the router and find out what the DHCP setting are. If the static IP address is in the range of the DHCP address then it will not work. Most routers are setup with DHCP enable from the box. Also, as a security setting they might be setup to reject static IPs if DHCP is enabled. I would personally uninstall that program and setup the IP address manually. |

![]() He screwed up his configuration, I have no idea where you get the idea he requires a static IP address, because I sure didn't read that in his posts! Since he's not obtaining a DHCP issued address, my first step is to make sure the WINSOCK LSP hasn't been corrupted, which is a very common reason for this issue. When you get tired of flailing around, I'll see if I can actually help him.

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
I think the problem lies within the media disconnected part. I tried another wireless network, and it connected just like it does here, but internet still doesn't work. I have (and followed detailed directions) messed with some Winsock and Winsock2 "keys" or something of that matter, but it didn't work before I tried that anyways.

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Why are you using IP changer in the first place? You can configure IP addressing in the properties of the connection.

Re: Changed IP --> Cannot access internet
Doesn't friggin matter now. We put XP on the laptop, forgot that we didn't have Vista anywhere, and we couldn't even see the wireless internet then. The drivers and such were gone, no sound card, etc, so i put the XP cd back in the drive during startup, and tried it again, and now it's currently putting XP back on again. Yeaaahhh...so here's a lesson to all the people who search this up on google: DONT MESS WITH ANYTHING ON YOUR COMPUTER, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, OR EVEN IF YOU'RE FOLLOWING DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS -_-
