is this doable?
i have a server and multiple pc's connected to a switch > firewall > modem
i want to upgrade to a newer wireless modem but want to avoid any downtime.. can i install a wireless card onto the server, connect to new modem, and continue sharing files before disconnecting from the old? if not... how do i go about making the switch step by step? does the server go into the uplink on the modem and the switch goes into an empty port or does the server stay in the switch and the switch goes into an uplink port or does it go into an empty port? it confuses me a bit... |

Re: is this doable?
intoit,
no matter what you do you're going to experience some sort of down time. Chances are your ISP is only going to allow one device associated to the account at one time. Is your wireless modem also you router? I'm not sure what OS your server is running but I would highly recommend not installing a wireless card on it for file sharing. If all of the workstations and the server are connected to the same switch then you can disconnect the modem/router and swap it out. It will only affect their internet connection. File sharing should continue to work. |

Re: is this doable?
If you are getting a new modem then you will not be able to avoid downtime. If you are talking about a wireless router then you can hook up your server directly to the modem then you can setup the rest of the network without minimal downtime to the server.

Re: is this doable?
heres the thing though...
i have 2 dsl lines running.. i want to get rid of the line that the server and network is currently on and move it over to the 2nd dsl line (different company/ip) so i guess what im really asking is this.... can i put a wireless card on the server, connect to the NEW modem while staying connected to the old so that i can share files to both connections? then install wireless cards on client pc's, connect to wireless modem for all pc's, and the pc's that are too far i can hardwire but since they were already connected wirelessly, they would experience no down time? then when all is done, disconnect the server from the old connection/modem? |
