Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

Hi all,

First time poster, but have been reading some good posts in here without solving my problem

I was wondering if anyone can help me... My problem lies in the fact that I have a laptop that connects to a wireless network but I still can't browse or do anything...

I have changed the ip and i have accessed the 192.168.... setup and all of this has done nothing.. we have 2 laptops and neither can connect to the reuter(one can't even connect normally, but let's solve one problem at a time).

The Modem is Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2... I am renting this house over the summer, so I don't own the modem...

I have restarted the reuter, but I haven't reset it, as it is not mine and I don't know what happens when I have to set it up again

I have listed what i get when I write cpconfig/all, because you guys might read something out of it(and I don't know what it means, even thought I am learning)....right now I have a static ip, as that was recommended without success,

Any suggestions and feedback is appreciated and I hope that you can help a fellow out

Kind regards

Palli

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

What is that wired connection?

You can't simply change the IP address and expect it to work. Configure it back to automatic IP addressing and let's see what you get there.

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

Can you ping the router at 192.168.2.1? It appears you have a connection to the router, but the router is not connecting to the Internet.

I'd browse to 192.168.2.1 and check the WAN settings to see if it's getting any connection to the Internet, my guess is no.

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

Hi John,

This is what happens when I ping 192.168.2.1

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\danh>ping 192.168.2.1

Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=150

Ping statistics for 192.168.2.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 3ms, Average = 2ms

and yes you are correct.. the WAN settings say this
WAN:
(MAC Address: 00-06-25-64-71-7B)

IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

Well, that means you sure aren't connected!

Can you get a connection directly to the modem? What is the make/model of the modem?

Here's a cookbook that should get you connected to any modem that is configured for DHCP.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

  • Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
  • Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
  • Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
  • Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
  • Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
  • Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
  • Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

It looks to me like, you have a wired connection that is plugged into your modem and not your router, that is why it has a public IP. And then you have a wireless NIC that you are trying to connect to the router which it does but the router doesn't have an external IP because your computer has it already. So all you should have to do is unplug your wired connection and then the router will get that IP and you should be good to go.

Re: Wireless connects, but still doesn't work

Hi John, thanks for the reply

Can you get a connection directly to the modem? What is the make/model of the modem?

The Modem is Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2 and I can't connect directly to it and that is the one I am trying to connect wirelessly to.
I connect directly to an NTL Home 200, that is where I get the internet from right now... So Lorjack might be on to something, but when I came the first thing I tried was to connect wirelessly on 2 computers....

Those two are not connected 2gether if that makes a difference..

I did what you said and these are the results.. and I checked the WAN and they are still at zero

Hey lorjack,

thanks for the reply,

you are on to something I think as the I am wired to an NTLhome200 and trying to connect to a linksys wireless... and I can not get a wired connection to it(linksys)...

I have tried to connect to the wireless before I tried the wired and I have on multiple occasion unplugged it.. repaired and restarted

I don't know the terminology between routers and modems, but I guess one is also wireless while the other one is only wired

Is it a possibility they should be connected 2gether, I will try that in a minute...

I don't really know what else to say right know, but I appreciate the feedback and I posted more info to Johnwill reply

Thanks for the help
Kind regards

The combination of this worked, I had tried this before, but after I reset the router and reconnected it again it worked... I wired those 2 together, the wireless hadn't been working for a few weeks after he reinstalled the windows said the person who is renting me the house... so that got me confused

Thanks so much for the help and I hope you have a wonderful week and years for that matter...
