Cannot Connect XP Laptop to Vista PC
Hi,
I have run all network setups on both machines, all workgroup names are the same and file and print sharing are on. I can see the XP Laptop via the Vista PC in Network Topology Map but not vice versa. I cannot connect to either machine from the other nor can i ping one from the other. Both machines are to be connected via my BT Home Hub, ip address are using DHCP with a lease time of 1 day. Can anyone give me some advice on what i have done wrong or what is causing this problem. Cheers Ian |

Re: Cannot Connect XP Laptop to Vista PC
A failure to ping is almost always a firewall problem. Disable all firewalls.

Re: Cannot Connect XP Laptop to Vista PC
After disabling all the firewalls, let us know if that allows the pings.
Let's see this from each machine. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands. NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Cannot Connect XP Laptop to Vista PC
Hi Johnwill,
After disabling Microsoft one care (xp laptop) and Avg 8.5 (PC) i could ping and connected the networks fine. After enabling the one care firewall, it still worked however AVG once enabled blocks it and i cannot see where i can enter the network so that the firewall treats it as safe. Do you still require me to send the requested info??? Ian |
