Mistake Don't Get it?

So I'm at my buddies house, he has comcast High Speed internet, which he hooks up to his laptop direct via CAT5 cable.

I took my computer over there, which is used to having a DSL wireless connection, but still has the Ethernet card on the MB, so I figured I could use his cable and plug it in and it would work just fine. but nothing. It shows there being a connection but it won't go onto the internet, I tried power cycling the modem and nothing. Tried rebooting my computer and nothing. But if I unplug the cable and plug it back into his laptop it works just fine.

I tried repairing the connection, and windows said it repaired it just fine, I tried adding a new connection and said I wanted to set it up manually and it would be on all the time, and it said that it should be set up already.

I went to one of the settings and I changed the connection to Obtain IP and DNS automatically, but still nothing.

I'm thinking its something in the settings, since I'm on my buddies computer on here, with the same cable and it works fine. but once its on my comp, nothing.

His laptop is running windows Vista, and I'm running Windows XP

Re: Don't Get it?

in my experience with DSL you need an install CD that enables you to easily login with the username and password to the pop3 server. i'm sure it can be done without such a cd but since you're having problems that's the first step i'd suggest

Re: Don't Get it?

If you told us the exact make/model of his modem and any router, it would help a bunch.

Have you tried troubleshooting the NIC from device manager?

Re: Don't Get it?

Hey thanks for all the tips guy...but I figured it out.

He always plugs directly into his Modem, he has a Router, but for some reason we could never get it to work, but I thought screw it, I plugged his modem into the router, plugged his laptop, and my comp into it...started both up, and tried to go change the settings in the router, but I couldn't log in, the manual said 192.168.1.1 but about a month ago I called the tech people and the guy had me make a new IP to log into it, but then I realized that both computers were running and on the net..still don't know why or how, considering directly into the modem didn't work, couldn't ping the router, but we get the net just fine..so I thought we got it now, just leave it..

Thanks again for the help guys!

Re: Don't Get it?

well if the router ip was changed then no you won't be able to ping it at the old address. it would be good for you to know what the current address is. and it's quite possible that you simply didn't have the pop3 settings entered into your computer which is why it worked on his but not on yours. the pop3 settings are entered into your router, which is why they both now work
