File Sharing with a Router in XP Pro
I have a broadband internet connection and I would like to set up a home network. I have a cable modem which plugs into a router with 2 computers connected to it. I enabled file sharing and set up folders to share but i cant access them. 1 computer has the others name listed but thats about it. I can get internet on both computers i just cant share any files, whats going on? If this was Win98 id be done by now..................

Hey mart_man00,
Ok, it is most likely that this problem is due to a protocol issue! A protocol is simply a set of rules that monitor or govern the way computers communicate with each other! Think about it as a language! In order for all computers to communicate correctly, all computers must know the same languages! They Must speak, and and listen to the same language as the others! Therefor, all computers in the network MUST have the same protocols installed! As you said, one computer can see the files of the other one, but you can't share files, and the other computer can't see anything at all. Because your computer can only listen or hear and understand the language, but can't speak it! Thats why one computer is visable, and the other isn't. How do you fix it? You have to make sure all same protocols are installed on all computers. To do that, Go to the Control Panel > Network Connection > Right Click on the LAN (Local Area Network) Connection Icon....... > Go to "Properties" Now, In the list of Items displayed, make sure the following is included: "Client for Microsoft Networks" & "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" & "NetBIOS" & Of course "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" Now, if these items are not included in that list on all computers, add them (You can do that in the same window) Another thing, Make sure that all Non-Windows XP computers have the correct IP Address set up of the entire network! Since WinXP Does everything automatically, you have to manually enter the IP Address into the others! All computers must have the same first three octets of the IP address, except the last one....... The IP address can be changed by choosing the TCP/IP from the list of items, and clicking PROPERTIES......... Are both computers running Win XP? If so, just run the Networking Wizard on both, and you should be fine......... I answered a similar question in another thread, so they're pretty much the same answer, try it out, and let us know how it goes. We will be happy to do all we can to help you solve this problem. Hope this helps. DaTruMasta Last edited by DaTruMasta : 11-27-2002 at 07:45 PM. |

Thanks for the reply, but it didnt do much yet! All of my computers do have XP Pro. I dont have NetBIOS installed(and cent seem to get it installed, its not listed when i click install), but i do have I NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I ran the wizard a couple times now. I tried 2 different setups and it still doesnt work.

No Problem, thats what we are here for :)
The NetBios not being installed can very much be the problem. It is a networking component that can be necissery for file sharing. Also, make sure you're router is properly configured. You can go into the router setup by typing in the following IP Address in the address bar in IE: (It is USUALLY this number: ) 192.168.1.1 You HAVE to configure the router from there as well, and make sure all the settings are correct...........especially those under the advanced tab. You should call the company that made the router, and they can assist you with setting up the router. What kind is it btw? |

my router is a Belkin 4 Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router. I have checked out the configuration page but what should i look for? Whats in the setup that is useful for networking, it looks like its mostly for internet?

I do have that enabled but it still doesnt work. What does Win XP Pro do that is so different from Win 98? This would be working now if i was still running it.
Both of my computers cant see eacher other. My desktop see nothing and my laptop on see the name. My laptop see the work group and the computer, when i click the name it says "\\Compaq is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administator of the server to find out if you have access permissions." Does this mean in System Properties under remore i should enable Remote Desktop? Is that what Micro$oft is calling file-sharing now? Thanks Guys |

well now after making sure all of the windows services are enabled, each computer only sees its self. Each computer has the exact same settings. Why dont they see eacher other? I do have a firewall(Norton) on my desktop but why cant the desktop see the laptop?

The reason I haven't responded further is I'm out of ideas. I have W98, W2K, and WXP all running with just TCP/IP using DHCP without problems. I'm having difficulty imagining what the issue you're having is...

Are you able to access the shares by using the "net use" command from a DOS prompt....?
Go to a DOS promt and try issuing the command........ "net use k: (insert your preferred drive letter here) \\"sharename" For simplicity now...the command would look like this.. NET USE K: \\SHARENAME OR...if NetBIOS is not functioning properly...instead of using the command above, you could issue the command below (which uses a fictitious ip address<insert your own network addressing instead> NET USE K: \\10.1.39.23\SHARENAME Hope that helps....
