Can't fine ethernet printer
Hi!
I have a printer on the network that my computer can't see. My computer can see one other computer on the network. The other computer can see the printer. I used a utility to print out its network configuration page. I'm certin the printer can see the router. How do I find the printer? I tried turning off windows fire wall. That is the only firewall I am aware of on my computer. The other computer has Norton. The router is a Belkin # F5D8236-4 Both the setup utility for the printer and Windows "add a printer" can't browse for the printer. Thanks for yore time George |

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type. PING <ip address> or PING <computer name> Where: <ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address <computer name> - is the computer name A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther. Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection. Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic. If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing. All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing. If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing. While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
Hi John
I am running XP so no wlan autoconfig. All the other services have started. I pinged the printer and the results are: Pinging (ip address) with 32 bytes of data Reply from (ip address): bytes = 32 time = 1ms ttl=255 Reply from (ip address): bytes = 32 time < 1ms ttl=255 Reply from (ip address): bytes = 32 time < 1ms ttl=255 Reply from (ip address): bytes = 32 time < 1ms ttl=255 Ping statistics for (ip address) Packets: sent=4, received=4, lost=0 (<0%loss) I have the windows firewall turned off right now and it is the only one as far as I know. I think it means they shook hands but I still cannot see it when I try the "add printer" command. The nbtsat -n command gave me a strange (to me) list: name type status killroy 00 unique registered myhome 00 group registered killroy 20 unique registered myhome 1E group registered myhome 01 unique registered ..__msbrowse_.. 01 group registered The network configuration page the printer made has a section called mDNS which is enabled and the "service name" is Photosmart D7200 series [3C86BF]. What part of that is the printer's name? What should I try next? I feel we are close! Thanks George |

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
HP normally includes a utility that does a search for the printer, did you try doing the automated installation?

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
John! When I run the included install utility, I get a message "The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
Maz! Easier said than done for me. I asked in a previous post, The network configuration page the printer made has a section called mDNS, which is enabled, and the "service name" is Photosmart D7200 series [3C86BF]. What part of that is the printer's name? I tried \\3c86bf, D7200, Photosmart D7200 and all other combinations I could think of and I get the message "(whatever name I used) The network path was not found." It is invisible to my computer. |

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
Sounds like you have either a partial install of the drivers or some other system corruption.
Did you disable the Norton firewall on the other computer?

Re: Can't fine ethernet printer
John! There is a partial installation because when I run the install utility for the printer, it asks whether it is a USB or network printer. I select network printer and moments later I get the error message, "The specified service does not exist as an installed service." My only option is to click ok and the installation is terminated.
A friend helped me get rid of Norton firewall and as far as I know, we were successful. I will contact him to try to verify no firewalls are active. Thanks George |
