Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

Did you turn off the modem after changing the connected device? Try turning off the modem and the router, then restarting the modem first, followed in a minute or two by the router.

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

i really only have acess to the router, the wireless modem is in another room which i cant ge into, I heard there may be something locking it out and only accepting the wireless modem, sounds wierd to me though....i know they dont want us to plug directly in, could they have blocked it somehow? when i try should my wireless card be off as well, maybe some sort of override? i will try the power thing again though

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

It's quite possible there's something going on there.

You might try cloning your computers MAC address into the router.

What's the EXACT make/model of the router?

Can you post the following information plugged directly into the incoming Internet feed that works?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

You need a router, not a switch. You have a connection that only allows a single device to connect to it, hence the 255.255.255.255 subnet mask.

Plug that main line directly into a broadband router and I think you'll have better results.

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

Let me get this right. There is a wireless "transmitter" that is allowing 30 people to connect? If so, that's got to be a router, because what you're seeing with a direct connection will allow exactly one connection.

What's the exact make/model of that "transmitter"?

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

yes i believe it is a router, so the line come in from the outside, into a switch then to a wireless router which allows us all to connect. is there a way i can get a hard line from the switch? can i put my own 3 port router in front og their router? what will that do to the othees connecting throught the wireless router?

Re: Wireless is OK but wired is confusing

I suspect trying to tap in before the wireless router will kill all the other connections, but it's hard to know without really knowing what's behind the curtain. Without knowing what kind of network is coming into the router, it's just a guess.

Can you post a screen shot of the WAN configuration page of that wireless router?

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
