File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Hello,
I would like to set up a file sharing network from XP to Vista Home via wireless connection. I have no network experience so need some help in doing so. I would like to have one folder to share things to. The rest of the folders cannot be be viewed or shared. How do I do this? Thanks |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Since Ive put a WPA-PSK Encryption, generally that should be enough right?
What I don't understand is WEP and WPA-PSK Encryption offers one password to bypass. So what makes WPA-PSK Encryption better or harder to hack? |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Yes, if you use a strong password, WPA is way better than WEP.
Quote from: http://markbowers.org/blog/?q=node/104 The way WEP works is that it encrypts transmissions with pseudo-random numbers. The random number is essentially based on the key that you provide. Encrypted messages are sent along with a 24-bit initialization vector which is sent in the clear. The clients use the initilization vector in union with the WEP key that you entered in order to decrypt the rest of the message. The trouble is that, due to the design of WEP, every once in a while, a weak initialization vector will be used, and part of the original key can be determined from the vector. Since the IVs are sent in the clear, if you gather enough of them, you can determine the entire WEP key.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Can you ping both ways by computer name?
Let's see this for each of the computers. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands. NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Under View Network connections in XP I see two computers my desktop and my laptop.
I can see my laptop vista drive when i click on it it says Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin to find out if youy have permission. The network path was not found. Last edited by jaaay; 05-12-2009 at 11:24 AM. |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
The IP addresses are all local network IP addresses, and millions of people have the same address. They're totally worthless to anyone that would want to do you harm.
You only posted the XP data, I need to see both.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
You never answered the ping question I posed previously.
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type. PING <ip address> or PING <computer name> Where: <ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address <computer name> - is the computer name A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther. Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection. Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic. If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing. All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing. If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing. While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Hi John sorry for the late reply, been busy and hadn't gotten around to do this but this week I have had a looked at it and managed to get both computers to connect over my router.
However it seems that the problem all along is my firewall. On both computers I have windows firewall off and Zonealarm activated. My computers are only able to see my each other if my zonealarm is switched off. How do I set it so zonealarm is able to allow my networks to see each other without switching my firewall off and on? I have had a look at the "program control" in ZA. There I can see trusted zones, however can't see anything related to my BT router or IP? as it only contains programs. Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
John, looking at again,
I found found the add IP trusted zone section and have tried adding the IP both as normal and as a range. My Xp IP is 192. XXX.XX.66 My Vista IP is 192. XXX.XX.67 Not sure why they are two different IPs? I have tried adding them as a range from 66-67 but nothing works? |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
My Ipconfig info is as
IPv4 Adress 192.xxx.x.67 Submask 225.xxx.xxx.0 Default gateway 192.xx.x.xxx I am not sure what I am suppose to add to the zonealarn trusted zones. Do I add an Ipaddress? IPv4?or default gatewat? Or do I add a IP range? Or a submask? |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Oh got it working.
I set the IP range to be larger then 192.xxx.x.66 - 192.xxx.x.67 I set it to range from 0 - 255 as people on google has suggested. Just wondering since the IP address is a long range, can other people access my computer who are connected to my network but don't have permission to? because for some reason I have a network name displayed a Thomson which has a printer icon inside it with nothing itside?

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
The trusted zone is 192.168.1.x, in other words any address that starts with 192.168.1.?
What kind of encryption are you using? With WPA or WPA2, you shouldn't have any freeloaders on the network.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
How about a screen shot of what you see?
To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
I just shut down my PC and switched my laptop on since that shows the network icons better as it's vista. Then noticed my desktop network line doesn't show up. Does my desktop have to be ON for my laptop to see my desktop on the network?
The Thomson folder didn't show up but then after refreshing it came back up again then disappeared ![]() Edit: The Thomson folder came back on the network again. Not sure who it is as it seems to be a computer but there should only be 2 computers connected? Inside the Thomson folder is an empty printer folder.
