Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
The Thompson "network" is your BT Hub.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
The fact that it's in workgroup BT seems to indicate it's coming from the BT Hub. I can't imagine where else it would come from.
Of course, I don't know what you blanked out, so it's somewhat hard to say.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Well, I can't imagine the name of your computer is all that confidential, mine is MAIN.
You can probably guess what my name is as well...What happens if you attempt to browse to that THOMPSON machine? How about putting it in the address of IE and trying to browse to it? FWIW, I only see two computers in the network, including THOMPSON, then a printer and the BT hub. Have you looked in the router's status panel to see what the IP address of this THOMPSON computer is?

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
I checked the BT router status, its says the thomson is a BT group. So I guess it is safe. When I browse the thomson folder there is a printers icon but nothing inside the printer folder.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Does the BT Hub have an optional print server by any chance?

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
I don't think so. Router is just broadband and telephone use. Doesn't have anything besides that. Or do you mean can a printer be attached to the router? It maybe able to for fax services? or via ethernet?
I have a printer which I run through the router via wireless connection. But that is Epson and there is already an Epson folder. |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
The fact that the THOMPSON folder has a printers folder tells me that it's a print server. Is there a USB connection on the router?

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Well, I'm pretty sure that THOMPSON entry has something to do with the router, but obviously not 100% positive.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
Sorry to bring this thread back up.
But I have a question. As my network is set up now it is working fine. One problem I have is the network is only active when my Desktop is switched on or connected to the network. Is there a way to set it up so when I move files from my desktop to the network share folder that I am still able to retrieve the file from my laptop WITHOUT my desktop being online? I am able to retrieve files from the network when my laptop is offline. But not when my desktop is offline. |

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
If the files reside on the desktop, clearly it has to be turned on to access them!

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
No, your router has no storage, it's just a router.

Re: File Sharing wirless, Windows XP to Vista
No, for the same reason. The storage device that the files reside on must be connected for what should be obvious reasons.
