Suddenly Internet won't work

Hi guys,

a few days ago I disconnected my modem because of a thunderstorm, and when I reconnected it the day after, my PC wasn't able to connect to internet.

I'm connected by cable to a router, which is connected to the modem. There are other PCs connected to the modem wirelessly, and they work perfectly. I tried connecting straight to the modem, and though I got slightly different error messages, it still wouldn't work.

When connecting straight to the modem, it gives me the error that my connection has "limited or no connectivity", and I am unable to renew my IP adress. The full error message in the command line is:

An error has occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

When connecting through the router, I don't get any errors, but nothing works, connection wizards on IE and Windows Live tell me that the "DNS can't resolve the IP adresses", and my internet connection reads "DISABLED". If I try to enable it, it says that it's connecting, but when it's finished connecting, it still reads DISABLED.

I have no firewall or anything, and I'm running XP SP2.

I have no idea what is going on, I've never had any problems with the network on this computer before, and I can't udnerstand why it suddenly stopped work. It's like my computer doesn't understand how to connect or something.

I've tried:

-Restarting modem and router and pulling cables in and out, and that sort of stuff
-Releasing and renewing the ip in the command line
-Done some winsock stuff I read could help, in the command line

Can anyone help me with this? Anyone know what's going on?

And on a side note, anyone know if it's really neccessary to pull out network cables in a thunderstorm? Haha.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output!

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
