Can Connect to Unsecured Networks, But Networks With Security Codes Cannot

I have this for my wireless connection Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card

I wasn't the one who put it on, and I don't have a disc to try to fix anything. Anywho, I can connect to unsecured networks (for example the public library) but I can't connect to sites with a 10 digit password.

I get this error message:

"The Network needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."

I know the password to the place I try to connect because they've told me the password.

If I put the password in both times, that's what shows, but if I try to add 3 more letters, then it will attempt to connect, but it won't because the password is incorrect.

Is there a way I can fix this?

I'm going to guess that you need a driver update, it sounds like the prompts you get from an older driver.

If the password is an alpha password and not HEX, it sounds like your adapter is not recognizing the encryption.

well the password is "coffeebean" without the quotations, and every time I do it, the 104bit and 32bit warning comes up.

how would I go about updating the driver?

If this is a Dell laptop, try using the Service Tag # from the machine and going to the Dell website and looking up the correct driver package for that machine.

Dell Service Tag

Re: Can Connect to Unsecured Networks, But Networks With Security Codes Cannot

Just a suggestion here:

Where are you entering the password?

In the property box? The key belongs here not password

Try this: double click the connection in the taskbar and let it open up
choose the connection you are trying to connect to
now go ahead and click on connect to whatever the connection name
let it try to connect, as it is trying it will pop up a box to enter the password or key
to gain access to the internet.

See if this works?

Re: Can Connect to Unsecured Networks, But Networks With Security Codes Cannot

well I go and I click on the wireless connection button, then it shows "the grind" which is the place I'm trying to connect.

I double click it, and then it shows that it needs a something to be entered, which is I'm guessing the 10 digit password.

I type that password twice, then it reads the above stated.
