Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Hi

I recently purchased a dsi and need to have a WEP encryption on my wireless router is this poss?

I have copied my ipconfig below

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

H:\>ipconfig / all

Error: unrecongnized or incomplete command line.

USAGE:
ipconfig [/? | /all | /renew [adapter] | /release [adapter] |
/flushdns | /displaydns | /registerdns |
/showclassid adapter |
/setclassid adapter [classid] ]

where
adapter Connection name
(wildcard characters * and ? allowed, see examples)

Options:
/? Display this help message
/all Display full configuration information.
/release Release the IP address for the specified adapter.
/renew Renew the IP address for the specified adapter.
/flushdns Purges the DNS Resolver cache.
/registerdns Refreshes all DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names
/displaydns Display the contents of the DNS Resolver Cache.
/showclassid Displays all the dhcp class IDs allowed for adapter.
/setclassid Modifies the dhcp class id.

The default is to display only the IP address, subnet mask and
default gateway for each adapter bound to TCP/IP.

For Release and Renew, if no adapter name is specified, then the IP address
leases for all adapters bound to TCP/IP will be released or renewed.

For Setclassid, if no ClassId is specified, then the ClassId is removed.

Examples:
> ipconfig ... Show information.
> ipconfig /all ... Show detailed information
> ipconfig /renew ... renew all adapters
> ipconfig /renew EL* ... renew any connection that has its
name starting with EL
> ipconfig /release *Con* ... release all matching connections,
eg. "Local Area Connection 1" or
"Local Area Connection 2"

Did you notice that you typed the IPCONFIG /ALL incorrectly?

If you don't remember the password, you'll have to reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

What is "dsi" do you mean DSL? If so then you after you rest the router to factory defaults you need to set it up for PPPoE, and to connect using Wi-Fi you need to enter the pass phrase on your computer, that you created in the router.

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Let's start from the top.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Name of your ISP: Virgin Broadband

Make and exact model of the broadband modem: Virgin Media standard modem

Make and exact model and hardware version of the router: Belkin Wireless G MIMO Router

Connection type, wired or wireless: I’m looking to change this to which ever is poss as can reset and have passwords

Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines: Windows XP

Internet Browser: Firefox

No errors, I wish to connect laptop to router and my new Nintendo DSi (as DSi requires a WEP connection and currently is locked when set)

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

I don't see any wireless hardware listed in that IPCONFIG.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Well, that shows a working connection to the Internet as well.

What issue are you currently experiencing?

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Well, if you want to use WEP, use the HEX key option, because passphrases sometimes translate incorrectly with some drivers and/or hardware.

WEP is the least secure, easily crackable. I would suggest using WPA instead, If your harware accepts it.

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Thank you i realise wep is the least secure however the dsi will not let you use multiplayer (wfc) if you do not have this security setting on your router.

i can connect my laptop and dsi with no security settings so score !

but cannot find a hex setting that works for my laptop:

i have the following options...

wpa-dsk(no server)
128bit wep
64bit wep
wpa(with radius server)

with 182bit wep i can create a 13 digit hex but then cannot get my laptop to access the router wirelessly !?

argh !!

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

Actually, with 128 bit WEP, the hex key is 26 characters in the range (0-9 and A-F).

Question Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

My mistake it said "13 hex digit pairs" so therefore it is 26, however i still cannot get my laptop to connect to the WEP connection when i use the passphrase generator... is this asking too much ?

Why not generate a passphrase, for your WEP key. Then all you need to do is enter the passphrase to connect.

Re: Belkin Router set to WEP is it possible?

The passphrase is not a good option for WEP because many brands of hardware come up with different keys for the same passphrase. This is a known issue with WEP, which is why I always recommend the HEX keys. You can simply invent your own HEX key, just 26 hex characters.
