MUSCLES!

Easiest way to set up a small LAN
I have 2 systems one is running ME and one is Running XP.
I want to network these 2 machines together to play games directly with each other. I tried to dialing directly to each machine via dial up networking, one responds but the other doesn't. So I was thinking why do that? They are right next to each other..... So the PC's are right next to each other........what should I do? Peer to Peer? Give me all of your best suggestions!! Yay!! TC

Yes, peer to peer ... obviously. ;)
Do you have 2 Network Interface Cards? (NICs). Do you have a hub or a switch? Ps. How did you dial one from the other? Do you have two or more phone lines? In a nut shell - you need 2 NICs and either a cross over cable or a hub or switch. You'll need the same protocol running on both for them to communicate. Let me know what your setup is so far and I'll be happy to help.

Yes I have 2 seperate phone lines.
I know there is a USB cable out there that I can use to link them both up, would that be easier? Then I won't have to go through setting up Domain. What do ya think?

You could use USB, I suppose. I haven't done it.
But you don't have to set up a domain! Way too hard. Depending on your apps, you might just be able to load NetBEUI and you're off!

That'll work although USB network connections are notoriously unstable .. When you order the cable make sure its a crossover cable and not a standard Cat5 or you'll pull all your hair out trying to get it to work ... and it still wont. :D
Just make sure to set the IP's similar (10.0.0.x) and the subnets the same with TCP/IP running on both .. IPX only if your games absolutely need it and you'll be all set.

I'm not sure how USB and CAT-5 cables got mixed up in your post, but they don't go together! :)
I'd be willing to bet that you'd get at least $25 worth of ulcers trying to get the USB lash-up to work properly. OTOH, you can buy 10/100 NICs for $10-12/ea, and a simple cross-over cable gets you out of the gate. You will have a much easier time getting Ethernet running, since that's were 99.9% of the networking effort is concentrated. |
