[SOLVED] Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
Looking for some help regarding the inability to directly access the 'shared documents' folder on a network I had worked on recently.
For reference, Kinbard had assisted me on reviving the system in question in the following thread, No Mouse Or Keyboard Due To Incompetence . To try and simplify things I will refer to the system I repaired as system 1 = S1, and its sister system as S2 K, now that S1 is back up and running, thanks to kinbards assistance, there now remains an issue where S2 can no longer access S1's shared documents folder. To clarify, S1 is able to access S2's shared folders without issue. Because I used the XP disk to repair S1, I had the thought that perhaps I needed to go back in and re-share the 'shared folders' on S1, but when I went into the properties of the shared folders they appeared to already be shared. As a precautionary step I unshared them and re-shared them again, but still S2 cannot access S1's shared folders, receiving the default "you do not have permission to access said folder. please contact the system administrator". Now here is the odd part....If I go in and share a sub folder withing the shared folders, S2 can then access the sub folder (which is then listed separately in My Network Places, but it still cannot access the main 'shared folder'. Does than make sense? Another issue that has cropped up since my unsharing and resharing the shared folders....S2 can no longer open the QBB folder that is stored on S1 within the shared folder, where before I tinkered with it today it was accessible. If you are not totally confused by my analogy, any ideas as to why, regardless of the fact that I have shared the folder/folders on S1, that S2 cannot access them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Last edited by mcharley94; 03-31-2009 at 12:58 PM. |

Re: Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
Take your time and look through the various tabs and drill down deep in the share properties. I had this issue last week with a domain share that was frustrating me. I had the security and share set to everyone, but it ended up I missed one share box.

Re: Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
Yeah, I am going to go in the rectory office tomorrow early AM before the other gal gets in and see if I can't resolve the issue, but I was hoping to get some insight first to expedite things.
One question I have, are the network sharing settings in XP Pro different than in XP Home. I ask because I don't recall seeing the options to "Allow Users To Change My Files" on the office computers like I see here on my own system. Actually, several things look different. Re: Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
I think in home your sharing is done by placing files in the share document folder. That is the only way you can share. I'm not 100% sure, though. I haven't been on an xp home machine in two years or more.

Re: Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
Well, I'd have to hook my other XP Home system up to verify, (I just moved my office to another room over the weekend and I haven't completed the process), but I think I can share any folder. Any folder I choose gives me the option to anyway.
What I do see in Home edition that I don't recall seeing in Pro was the options for local sharing vs network sharing. I seem to recall there were less options in Pro (there are separate sections in Home Edition, i.e. Local Sharing and Security & Network Sharing and Security) |

Re: Unable To Access Shared Folders Over Network
To verify, (I just hooked up my other system), I am able to share folders other than those within My Shared Documents in the tree, both XP Home systems
