I am trying to connect 2 systems on a small office network connected with a hub. WS1 is running XP PRO and seems to be working correctly, is as much as it can see itself under the network workgroup (MSHome), see its shares and can ping itself (192.168.0.10). It cannot ping ws2(But I can see the activity at the hub).
WS2 is running XP Home SP2, cannot see itself, under the 'view workgroup computers' gets a error window that 'MShome cannot be accessed - (something about no permissions, contact the server admin)', cannot see its shared directories, nor can it ping itself (192.168.0.11). I have installed a new network card on the off chance that the original was bad, but no change. It would appear that there is something wrong with the workgroup access on WS2, but I cannot find anything where I can set any permissions for it in anyway on either machine. I have changed to another workgroup name, but with no effect. At one time I had compared the services on both machines and had set them to match what was on WS1, but could not make any progress. Anyone have any ideas? running the network setup wizard is no help (is it ever?), and I have filddled with IP protocol/device configuration until I am blue in the face. Re: Can't access workgroup computers
Can WS2 ping the localhost (e.g. ping 127.0.0.1 or ping localhost)?
Does WS2 have any security setup, particularly firewalls? I know SP2 enabled the firewall by default so you will need to make sure that exceptions are allowed and file/print sharing is one of the exceptions.

Re: Can't access workgroup computers[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Yes, 127.0.0.1 will ping on WS2 - should have stated that - and if I use 'ping ws2' on the cmd line, it will attempt to use the correct address so I know the hosts file is working. Also interface IP Filtering is set to allow all types. The firewall is off on WS2.
