file sharing OR internet access: why can't I have both?
Hello,
I'm having a bit of trouble connecting one of my three PCs to my home network. Here is the set-up: I am utilizing a linksys WRTG45. -Computer 1 runs on XP and is hard-wired to the router; -Computer 2 runs on vista and is connected to the router via wireless; -Computer 3 runs on Win98 and is connected to the router via wireless, with a USB wireless adapter. All three share the same workgroup name. Computers 1 and 2 are fine. They can see each other and access the internet. Computer 3 used to work just as well, until a couple days ago. Now, it can only do one or the other: -when I assign the USB adapter an IP (like 192.168.1.103), I can connect to the other two, but then I can't access the internet. -when I check the "Obtain an IP address automatically" line, I can access the internet, but not the shared folders on 1 and 2. I also noticed that when I log in to the router's interface, computer 3 never appears in the DHCP table, whereas the other two do. I'm pretty sure it used to. Thanks in advance for any idea or suggestion. |

Re: file sharing OR internet access: why can't I have both?
Top suspect here is the #3 is connecting to someone else's network and not yours. The fact that you see the symptoms you do with manual and automatic configuration seems to verify that.
Try removing ALL stored wireless network profiles and searching for your network again. If you have not changed the SSID of your router to something unique, now is a good time to do that.
