Problems setting up local network

I am trying to set up a connection between my desktop and another computer I've been cleaning up, using crossover link. I've used the network setup wizard on both computers but both are still showing "a network cable is unplugged". I have successfully linked these 2 computers in the past but can't figure out what's wrong this time. Could I have deleted an important file on the 2nd computer? Both use XP.

Very helpful, thanks - I hadn't configured the IP addresses on the other computer, which I have now done tho' they are both still saying the network cable is unplugged.
