Internet connection over switch network.
I'm running two machines with Vista, and I want to connect them through a switch and share the Internet connection between them. The modem plugs straight into the first computer.
The problem I'm having is that the network is always "Unidentified network" on the first machine. The second computer then gets an Internet connection for a few minutes after the network is set up, but then drops out and never gets back on. |

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
Take a look at this Step by step Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) setup in Vista tutorial.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
That made things worse, sorry. Using that tutorial, the second computer doesn't get a connection at all.
This is what my network looks like. Cable Modem>>>This PC>>>Switch>>>Second PC |

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
Let's see this for each of the computers.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands. NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
First off, enable DHCP on both of the machines to start. ICS won't function if the secondary port is manually configured.
It appears the first machine has a good connection, are you saying that one can't access the Internet?

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
Post 8 is this computer, the one that has the connection. Post 9 is the one which can only get a connection for a few minutes. I picked up those diagnostics during the few minutes when it had a connection.
With both this PCs secondary network card and the second PC's card set to automatic, I can't PC 2 to connect to the Internet at all. Still have the local connection, though. Last edited by The Frederick; 03-24-2009 at 12:52 AM. |

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
I'm not sure where you're going wrong, but I think I'd be considering a router, much easier to deal with.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
The router does not throttle the Internet, and I suspect you'd have both computers connected long ago with the router.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
Is there such thing as a router with no firewall and no port forwarding, that just directs friggen network traffic? You have no idea how annoying it is when a crappy little piece of hardware makes half of your programs not work any more.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
The whole point of the router is the NAT layer which allows sharing the Internet. FYI, when you use ICS, the second machine has the same issue, but there is no port forwarding possible with ICS.
Millions of people use routers every day, and it doesn't make half their applications stop working. Perhaps if you simply recognized that you need such a capability and spent your energy in solving the issues involved we'd make progress.

Re: Internet connection over switch network.
I just don't like the fact that as soon as I place a router into my network, oops, this program is blocked by the router firewall, this one needs port forwarding. I don't like that. Once, a router I bought had a glitch in the software that prevented port forwarding at all.
