Hi.
Problem: No internet connection What have i tried to do: - New network card - new cable - other port in the router - Restart router - restart computer - deactivated / activated network card - new drivers to network card - repair - renew ip - winsockxpfix - formate from xp to vista * Linksys router * Dell computer * Windows Vista * Cable connection Before i got "Local or limited connection" then "no cable connected", now when i have new network card i dont get that. Im connected it says but i get only 1 ip (@ ipconfig). It says at ipconfig: tunnel adapter local area connection 7* and a weird ip adress but no gateway etc. When i try to write ipconfig /renew error comes: An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection 2. Unable to contact DHCP server. Request has timed out . No operation can be performed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected. -regards KM |

Re: Local or limited connection - No internet
From the last error message, the machine is trying to connect to a DHCP server (which ought to be in the router), but not finding one. Could you do ipconfig/all, and paste the output into a new message in this thread, please?
Could you also tell us the model of your router. Are there other machines on the network, and are they connecting to the network OK? David |

Re: Local or limited connection - No internet
One hint for future reference: you can cut and paste the actual text of a Command prompt session into a message. That usually makes it easier to read than a screenshot.
As regards the actual output, johnwill's diagnostic ability is much greater than mine. However, the 169.254.xx.xx addresses are a pretty sure sign that your computer cannot get a suitable IP address from DHCP. This could be because 1. Your router doesn't have DHCP (unlikely), or it is switched off; 2. DHCP isn't working properly. If we knew the model number of your Linksys router, we could help more specifically, but for now I'd do a full reset on your router, in case that restarts DHCP. If you can get into the router configuration page, I'd also check that DHCP is not disabled. David |

Re: Local or limited connection - No internet
You can't reset it, for the rather good reason that it's a switch and not a router! Your DHCP server is not working because you very likely haven't got one. The advice in my last post is therefore irrelevant.
The next question is: what make/model is your cable modem? Given the nature of your problem, I assume that it connects via an Ethernet (network) cable; is that correct? Does the modem give you an internet connection when it is connected directly to the computer? Before we give you any further advice, I think we need to know what you are trying to do here, and particularly what worked in the past and when it stopped working. If you are trying to connect several computers to your modem through the Linksys switch, that raises some serious security issues; you should be using a proper router, rather than the switch. If you only want to connect one computer, I am at a loss as to why you need the switch. David Last edited by DavidHB; 03-02-2009 at 10:38 AM. |

Re: Local or limited connection - No internett
Lately ive added a new switch (maybe that is the problem?)
First: There is a box at the wall named "Telsey" its the box that gives internett and tv signals etc. then it goes over to another box "Elkolink", and then over to 3 different switches. :S? |

The names of your boxes suggest to me that you have a bespoke Ethernet-based home media distribution system based on connection products from the Norwegian firm Elko. While this system will undoubtedly use TCP/IP networking technology, I'd guess that any expansion will need to be based on compatible components and be installed by a specialist. I doubt that anyone using this forum would be able to offer you help in these circumstances. Sorry, but, as I read the specifications of the Elko products, what you have is pretty far removed from computer networking as we understand it, and I cannot offer you any sensible advice except that, with this kind of system, you should probably leave well alone. Re: Local or limited connection - No internet
Sorry if it wasn't clear. What I'm saying is that, bsed on what Elko say about their products on their website, and the fact that you say that you have 3 switches, I guess that you have a network for distributing Internet, TV, and perhaps other things also, through your house. Is that correct?
If I'm right, or even nearly right, what you have is a specialist system which will almost certainly be set up in a special way. It would be very foolish and unhelpful of us to advise you about a system of which we know very little. Probably. What is for sure is that it will not do what you want until you can get good advice about the way your system is set up and what you need to do to expand it (which I assume is what you are trying to do). The people you need to call is whatever company fitted the system in your house. If that is the Internet company, then yes, they would be the best source of advice about what can and cannot be done. Ideally, there would be proper documents with the system that explain how it is configured, and how, for example, you set up a computer which is attached to it. If I have completely misunderstood your system, please forgive me. As I said, I have had to make some assumptions, based on the information you gave us. David |

Re: Local or limited connection - No internett
This conversation has gone on at some length, and I've yet to see any understandable diagnostic data.
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.
On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key: PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

If you look at the websites of the manufacturers whose names he gave us, their products seem to be components of quite highly customised media distribution systems. While these things are certainly Ethernet based, and TCP/IP presumably has to be in there somewhere, there is no information on how they are set up. The Elko product line seems to consist only of wiring, switching and distribution products (including signal amplifiers and gateways), while Telsey manufactures access gateways, including a broadband router. The systems seem to be designed to carry VOIP and streamed media as well as computer data. Could one add off-the shelf product to a system of this kind and make it all work? I haven't a clue. Re: Local or limited connection - No internett
That's why I wanted to know exactly what environment we were actually debugging.
