Strange connection prompt
Greetings all. I have a weird situation that I'm hoping someone maybe familiar with, I don't know. I am no noob at computing and networking, but I am not a guru either, and I can't seem to find any relevant threads here, so, without further delay, allow me to explain the situation here.
I currently have a lan set up at home. This is actually my third set up, and I have never come across this before but read on.. I am running Slackware linux on my desktop pc. It is connected the lan port on the router with an ethernet cable. I have internet access just fine. Everything works. By the way, I am using a linksys wrt160n router, it's wireless capable, and nat compatible. Now, my wife is using an Acer laptop that is running Vista Home Premium. When I went to set hers up, everything went exactly as expected. I made a new connection in Network and Sharing, and just like it's supposed to, it scanned and found wireless networks. Our network ssid is DELTA, and it shows up like expected. When I clicked to connect, I was prompted for the security key. I entered the key and the settings were saved and she connected just fine. Infact, it connects just fine automatically each time, so, everything appears to be in order. Ok, moving on. Last night, my daugter's boyfriend is here and he wants to connect with his laptop to do some homework, so, naturally, I give him the security key so that he can. Well, here's where it gets weird. When he tries to connect to DELTA, he gets this dialog with 2 buttons. One is telling him that he needs additional logon credentials, and the other says choose another network. (didnt get this prompt on wife's lappy, it just asked for a security key) When he clicks on additional credentials, instead of being asked for a security key for DELTA, he gets a weird prompt that looks like a remote desktop prompt, where it is asking him for a username, a password, and a logon domain. Say what?? I do not know what this prompt is for or why he is getting it. We tried several things like his pc's user name and pass, and a legit username and pass for the linux machine along with the domain host I configured it for. No go. We tried several different things infact, but nothing worked. When I diagnose, it tells me some mumble jumble about a certificate or somecrap ( I tried to get him to leave the lappy here today so I could mess around and post any exact wordings here, but he needed it) I just want to know why hes getting this prompt, and how to go about getting him connected. I reviewed my router and network settings, and everything seems to be in order, and like I said before, my wife's laptop connects just fine everytime. So why is he getting this weird prompt when he tries to connect and how can I correct this? Is anyone familiar with this situation by any chance? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Strange connection prompt
i know this is a long shot, (rediculously long) but do you think that changing the the workgroup ID on his machine to match might be a possible solution?
Heh, just sittin here pondering. Ill have to play around and try and figure it out when he returns later tonight. Im pretty sure it's something on his end and not mine but I could be mistaken. |
