Re: domain controlleroblem
From what i can see fo this you hage the following setup.
Net |--Switch **|--2k3 Server **|--Wireless Router ****|--Clients First off... if this is the case you need to fix it ASAP, put a decent firewall between you and everyone else. 2nd, from what i can skim off what you said you are trying to access your pc over the net using something like \\9.9.9.9\sharename its been a while since i looked low level for ms networking, but if memory serves there is a certain ammount of broadcast traffic, and to authenticate with 2k3 you need the correct dns server records ad integrated stuff, cant be too much more specific at thisa time of night. Im going to take a guess here that you want to access your files from home while at work.... perhaps there is a better way =) you can install RRAS on your 2k3 box and establish an encrypted VPN between the two. or you can allow remote desktop and share your local drive so you can copy files to and from the remote machine to yours. there are a load of other ways but these are the two which i think would possibly be best in this situation... perhaps if you give more information about what exactly you are trying to get to then more people can help you find easier and more secure ways to do it. and please turn on your firewalls before i start to cry. Re: domain controlleroblem
you will need to establish a VPN between the shop and your home, running one from the vista machine isnt going to work very well.
so a pair of cisco 1841's with a vpn between them, you should then be able to communicate directly with the 2k3 DC and join the domain, but there will be a lot of services which will only be avaliable while that connection is established unless you plan to install a 2k3 DC at your shop also and seperate the domain into multiple sites, you will have to consider FSMO roles GC locations etc... keeping the vista machine seperate will quite possibly be easier and using a VPN established from the vista machine across the net will give you access to network resources from the 2k3 DC so long as you provide the correct login creds. it will also be cheaper as i dont believe there is any aditional cost for the 2k3 DC for running RRAS and the client side VPN stuff is inbuilt into vista xp etc. Asg |
