Public IPs and NAT ips on same network
Hello!
I have five public IPs (static) from my ISP. I have 5 computers that I need to access from the outside world. I also have additional devices that need internet access but do not need to be accessed from the outside world. My plan is to use four of the public IPs directly on the three servers and one of the desktops that I need to access from the outside. I'd like to use the remaining public IP to sit on an additional router which could serve as a wireless as well as dhcp server for the "internal" network. I need for all computers to be able to access to the internal network as well as the internet. How do I get the public IP computers to be able to talk to the 10.0.0.x devices (like network printers)? The external router is a gigaset sx762 wlan (wireless turned off). The internal router (wireless is running on this one) is a USR 5461. There are two w2003 servers, 1 linux server, two xp desktops, two xp laptops, three voip phones, and 3 network printers. Last edited by kwimberl; 02-24-2009 at 10:12 PM. |

Re: Public IPs and NAT ips on same network
thats where NAT comes in. instead of giving each machine the actual external ip, you map them in NAT on your router/ firewall.
you have or should give each server and the desktop a static ip address. that static ip address is then mapped to the external ip address. open the ports you need and viola. all computers will be able to talk and see each other because they are actually on the same network but will look from the outside like they are the external ip. it's also much safer.

Re: Public IPs and NAT ips on same network
Since I suspect you would actually like to use the separate static public IP addresses for the servers, you probably need to invest in an upscale router/gateway that handles multiple WAN IP addresses.
