Power over Ethernet "pinouts"

what are PoE Pinouts? And are they the same for all 802.3af compliant products?

I'am having trouble powering my nortel i2004 ip phone which is PoE compliant with my D-Link des-1316 PoE, QOS switch. I have mad sure that the PoE is turned "on" in the switch settings. I have been reading up on PoE and have come accross something called "PoE Pinouts." I'am not sure what this is or why they would be different on different products that use the same protocol but I just want to rule out every possible issues.
