Red Faced [SOLVED] Is It Possible To Connect Two Computers Without Hub?

Hi, Let me give you some background information before I ask the question. I have two computers one is a Xp Sp2 pro laptop and another which is a XP SP2 Home. I want to make a small network to share files and printer capabilities, but I only have one dsl modem. Is it possible to connect both computers to the same modem one through USB and another through the ethernet connection? If not can I use that modem to somehow network the computers? Im almost pretty sure you can't do that so I have one more question, Can I make a Network having the host computer on dsl and the guest connecs through dial-up?

Thanks

connect the two comps with a nic card and a cross over cable
the second computer will access the internet through your main computer, but it will have to be on for it to be able to
or use a router
